Last 80s poll for awhile. Quite a good chart, IMO. The only one I don't remember is the Ray Parker Jr single.

Pick as many as you want.

Interesting chart: there's very little on it that I really, really like - but there's also only one or 2 songs that I really, really dislike.

Usually I can find a few songs I love and a few I hate, but this is a totally "down the middle" chart.

Which isn't bad, I guess - I don't think I've ever seen a chart with less "chaff" than this one!

Great chart from my favorite era of top 40 music! I don't recall ever hearing the Ray Parker Jr. hit at the time of release either, but it's since become one of my favorites by him. I suspect Tom Petty was a fan, as there are definitely some striking production similarities with his "Don't Come Around Here No More" that came out in 1985.

    Other favorites from this chart:
    1. KARMA CHAMELEON –•– Culture Club – Certainly their commercial peak, possibly their artistic peak as well. They had a few more hits in the US after this but nothing as good as this classic single.
    2. OWNER OF A LONELY HEART –•– Yes – Back in the early '70s who would have guessed Yes and Genesis would have pop hits in the US top ten at the same time?
    6. I GUESS THAT’S WHY THEY CALL IT THE BLUES –•– Elton John – Classic ballad, one of the best things he's ever done.
    8. THAT’S ALL –•– Genesis – Underrated and understated track from the last album by Genesis that I liked. Has aged better than anything off of Invisible Touch.
    14. LET THE MUSIC PLAY –•– Shannon – One of the great dance tracks of the '80s.
    16. HOLIDAY –•– Madonna – Her first great single!
    17. TWIST OF FATE –•– Olivia Newton-John – Her last great single!
    18. 99 LUFTBALLONS –•– Nena – MTV played this constantly at the time. I always thought the (male) keyboard player resembled Joni Mitchell, at least in the video. Amazing cheekbones, lol!
    25. UNION OF THE SNAKE –•– Duran Duran – The release of this single in advance of Seven and the Ragged Tiger was a huge event as Duran-mania was rapidly growing in the US in the wake of Rio's success. They rarely perform this one live any more, even though it's one of the biggest hits they ever had here.

This was very early in 1984. By the middle of the year I think things were as good as they ever got for pop music in the 80s.

"That's All" is one of my absolute favorite Genesis songs. Pure perfection. I select ''99 Luftballoons" with the caveat that it must be the German version. My local radio station only plays the English version, which is far inferior in my opinion.

I've read countless articles by critics stating that 1984 was probably the best, most diverse pop chart in history. I personally love '83 and '85 more, but yes, 1984 was quite fine. My favorites from this chart:

It's interesting, I got most of my pop exposure from MTV w/ maybe a little from a little AM top 40 station out of Elmira, NY back then. Therefore, I really don't know any of the r&b tracks on this list. I can see why Rick James ended up suing.

Other than "Nobody Told Me," not a particularly great list. But I remember hearing all of those songs playing on the radio and MTV as a kid growing up that year, so nostalgia kicks in, I suppose...

99 Dead Baboons should have charted.

As for 99 Red Balloons, I don't recall if it was the German version that charted, or if it was the English version. Regardless, the German version sounded better to my 8 year old years.

I remember this age SO very well. Between MTV and KKHR-FM I heard everything on this chart, a lot.

It's crazy.. at the time I was straddling the lines between Top 40, AOR, metal, and new wave.

This is a pretty good chart, and I voted for 15 out of the 25 - a good return!

What I like, is the variety, You have 3 pop classics, in Culture Club, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper. Yes, Van Halen, and Genesis, managing catchy tunes, without alienating all of their fans.

And, Police, Pretenders, Billy Joel and Christopher Cross with strong songs.

One for Bobby, Olivia with a song from the soundtrack, of a film, co-starring another Greasey actor . Was this her last big hit?

Fond memories of Nena, both English and German versions, as I was going out with a German girl when this was out. Bought the 12", but actually prefer the shorter 7" version, to the "stuttering", extended mix.

Pink Houses, an excellent cut from a great album.

The two I'm leaving to last, as I think they deserve a special mention, are, Nobody Told Me, and I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues. A great return to form from Elton, and John showing he still had some good music to give.

It was the German version that was always listed on the Hot 100 chart, but the English version also received substantial airplay as well. I wish they would have listed it separately on the chart to see how it would have done up against the German version.
