Inspired by earlier posts in this thread, I'm listening to a smattering of Hilary Hahn's renditions of various violin concertos -- she's mah favourite. (I've seen her several times in concert, and she's always very nice. Once, she even notated my program to indicate the alternate playing order she had performed that evening.) At work, I've been going through my collection of Prokofiev's Piano Music as performed by Frederic Chiu. This one: What, in tarnation, is that?
Listening to soprano Louise Alder accompanied by Joseph Middleton on piano from her recording 'Through life and Love' , a selected trawl through the Richard Strauss leider book. Louise was a finalist at the recent Cardiff "Singer of the World' where she won the coveted 'Audience Prize' awarded by Dame Joan Sutherland. Inspired singing and sympathetic accompaniment make this debut solo recording my best of the year ,so far!
Now playing CD22 - Haydn Piano Sonata No. 62 Schubert Sontinas for Violin & Piano Nos. 1 & 2 from the following box for a first listen ...
This may be the only Rudolf Baumgartner's box in my collection. The soloists were quite outstanding from the 1960's and 70's ...
I see now The recent "There Is No More Firmament" is brilliant (another chamber work disk, some current Zorn concert pieces from that disk that a few ensembles are currently touring, I enjoyed the hell outta that one!)
More on Elgar's graduation music .. Elgar's march was used for the coronation of King Edward VII. It first became associated with graduations in 1905, when it was played when Elgar received an honorary doctorate from Yale University in 1905, but it was played as a recessional, not as a processional, at the ceremony.
I don't often play Beethoven's first two symphonies, so this morning I'm going to revisit the 2nd. This is Antal Dorati leading the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. My notes from a previous playing indicate a "fine performance of No. 2, but a really superb Prometheus overture!" This is a Mercury "Golden Imports" record, made in the Netherlands, from around the mid-70's.
Did not know a thing about this guy. I was intrigued by the striking cover presentation of this box. Went on YouTube and listened to a selection of his solo recordings. Went online to order this box from the Moose (and also the prior 5xCD box of complete concerto recordings from ImportCDs.) Hey, I'm impulsive like that.
Congratulations. So far I've listened to two of the CDs and really enjoyed them. Hope you will two. Thanks for the tip about the concerto box.
Good morning everyone! On the TT....before we take of to the start of this summer dollar sale at the local used records store. YAyyyyy
So glad you invested in acquiring his work. I've been lucky to know him since I was very young and see him in concert as well.
Putting my favorite Brahms concerto on the TT. This is one of my favorite recordings of it, with Geza Anda and Ferenc Fricsay. Recorded in May, 1960. Germany.
Does it take that long to cross the GW? I hate crossing that bridge in the mid afternoon when I returned home in Westchester NY from work in Newark. I chose the Garden State then Tapanzee instead ...
