I can tell you from personal experience there was a great rush for each of the Beatles releases, unlike any other CD's up to that time-people lined up outside at midnight. They actually increased with each set. I was there, ringing them up for people.

The Walmart CD reaction showed that Bruce doesn't pay attention. Plus why give Jon 10-15% if he can get others to do it for millions less?

Springsteen has a fairly tight inner circle, and Landau has been part of it since 1975. Landau has a lot of pull. He played a major role shaping Darkness, The River, and particularly Born In The USA (and its accompanying tour). I don't think anyone believes Landau tells Bruce what to do, but he clearly has a lot of influence when it comes to professional/career matters, and I would not be surprise if Bruce defers a number of decisions to Landau in that regard.

Most managers are going to take 15%. Bruce generates a lot of money, but that doesn't mean a manager is going to invest his or her time and resources into managing an artist for a discounted price just because it is Bruce. Also, Landau knows where the bodies are buried so-to-speak. He and Bruce have been together for a long time. Bruce trusts him. Landau has been able to generate huge money for Bruce and has been able to ensure Bruce has the artistic freedom to do what he wants, so it isn't as if Bruce needs a fresh change in direction. The Walmart CD exclusive debacle falls on both the shoulders of Landau and Bruce; Springsteen simply made a bad judgment call on that one.

Look for contemporary news reports and tell me what you can find for the CDs after the initial 4. You're gonna find way way way more about the 1st 4 than the others - again, with an asterisk for "Pepper's".

If you want to go the anecdotal route, here goes: in 1987, I knew almost no one else who had a CD player. However, lots of friends/colleagues talked about the initial 4 and were curious about the whole thing. Never had those discussions again for the remaining CDs...

Mine must be from a different source because at the very beginning of the second set, it sounds fantastic and then the levels go way down after that so that everything sounds very far away and muffled for the rest of the show.

I have a good copy of the Palladium show as well as one from earlier in '76 from the Roxy (Goin' Back cover anyone)? As to 77, the Boston run of shows is legendary but the recordings supposedly don't exist. That is the Holy Grail for me in this series.

"Lift Me Up" from Ohio, 2005 is the kind of individual track and performance that makes tour compilations and those kinds of 'buy song' options very appealing to me. Have a lot of catching up to do with the sheer number of and dozens of official downloads that have been released. There's almost 125 full concert official downloads from 2013-2017 alone.

Having just played the '08 St. Louis show again, I am as convinced as ever that Springsteen's contemporary era live work is noticeably inferior to the greatness of his 1970's-1980's period.

and go down to 1977-03-22 and read the comments about available recordings. Pardon my ignorance, but who is Steve Hopkins/JEMS?

Well, what do you expect? Of course an artist in his 20s and early 30s will be more vital. And if you go to his shows even now they are pretty much still the best around. Many of which have more interesting setlists than earlier in his career.

While I'm not much of a Bruce fan, I'd agree, based on what I've heard. I'd say the same for a few other artists, too...Billy Joel, for example. His mid-70's to early 80's live stuff kills anything recent

I saw a show at MetLife last year and it was awesome to be there and experience it live. But I'm just not to keen on listening to it again. I may still order the one from the show I attended as a souvenir , but I'd be more interested in listening to shows from 1973-78.

Maybe one reason why a compilation download of performances of songs from these year 200 tours could maybe be a good idea. For instance, that performance of "Lift Me Up" from Ohio 2005 is a very moving and compelling one.

I think in general the tempos have slowed a bit and he's not as able to 'reach' that kind of sustained or transcendent 'intensity' with his voice due to age that maybe some of the songs need in order for them to really have that emotional wallop that we are used to hearing from the classic period, imo. I think there is probably a 'burn-out' factor on parts of the 'standards' too. I am enjoying this St. Louis '08 concert, in bits and pieces, I mean, it seems fine to my ears, performance-wise, but I wouldn't make much more of it than being a record of a professional live performance by Bruce and band, with good sound quality and songs. Perhaps a second listen might have been too much to ask from it? I don't think the mixes I have heard are as helpful as they could be. His vocals often seem to me a little too forward while the band gets mixed too far back, imo, If his voice 'sat' more closely mixed with the band mix, then I imagine it could be an improvement in the overall presentation.

I was in the pit for the final two shows of that stand, and not only was it incredible to experience in the moment, I've re-listened to the downloads several times since and have enjoyed them as well. Let's face it - Bruce's shows have been on the bloated side since the Born In The USA tour (as any 13-minute version of 'Do You Love Me' from 1985 will illustrate). Once you learn to enjoy the many high points of a given show and accept that not EVERY moment is going to be brilliant, it's easier to appreciate the concerts as an overall experience. For me, that third night of MetLife will likely stand as the greatest concert I will ever attend. :righton:

JEMS was an import label back in the day that carried both legitimate European releases and Recordings Of Dubious Origin. Not sure who Steve Hopkins is though.

Thanks for sending that link. The first entry about the Ronnie Spector sessions is intriguing. I have the released 45 but am now curious about what else is in the vault.

Yes, I was at that final show. I'm a long-time Springsteen fan who isn't too keen of his most recent albums and hadn't seen him live since a long, boring show at the old Giants Stadium in 2003 and so I had little inclination to see him again live when a friend of mine called with a ticket. I was immediately enthralled with the song selection and overall performance and I count myself lucky that I caught a show on The River Tour where The Boss did away with the theme of the tour.
For someone who's been a fan for 40 years. I've only seen him live maybe a dozen or so times and 8/30/16 at MetLife easily equaled my first Springsteen concert, 12/80's Nassau Coliseum during the original River Tour.

I pretty much knew what to expect. That being said, a number of Springsteen fans continue to assert he is as great as ever, and it is hard not be influenced by the rhetoric from time to time, and that is why from time to time, I check out some of these contemporary era shows, perhaps expecting something more. I should know better.

Also, I think it is probably a much better experience to be in attendance at one of these shows, than listening to it as a recording (although I was not particularly impressed the few times I saw him in person 1999 onward). That is not necessarily the case for his vintage work -- yes, it was probably better to be there in person even then, but the recordings of the 1970's and 1980's concerts present one of rock's great artists in his prime, and the performance quality is generally superb.

FYI, JEMS is not an import label. They are group of guys (one of whom recently passed away) who have a large collection of tapes and have been active for years. They frequently share their collection on various sites, and they are always of the highest quality--to say they are meticulous is an understatement.

    Thanks for the info!

You wouldn't have any further details about the '77 show, particularly if it was a SBD or not? No SBD recordings of any '77 shows have ever surfaced, and it has been long rumored that none exist, as supposedly the band was making "Official Audience Recordings," as they have been dubbed, using mics placed at the mixing board and aimed at the speakers.

Some of these recordings are very good.

There's JEMS (the boot team) and Jem Records (the label that did import some albums - most famously Cheap Trick's Budokan which caused Epic to release it domestically).

No, there are none. 77 is THE year to get out there. 74 would be second. There are a lot of audience tapes, but I've never heard one that fulfills the hype that surrounds it (soundwise). Don't Look Back and Action in the Streets live? Count me in! And don't forget he had the horns with him, so he was able to get in touch with his inner soul man.

Slightly rhetorical question: WHAT artists, exactly, are singing and playing better live now than they were 20-30 years ago in their prime?
Not Bruce, as some have mentioned negatively. And ALSO (deep breath), not Dylan... McCartney... Billy Joel... The Who... Fleetwood Mac... U2.... Metallica.... The Stones... Madonna.... KISS.... And on and on and on...

I mean, there's a few small exceptions, like Tom Waits or Nick Cave. Maybe even Pearl Jam with their current epic shows and changing setlists. But that said, I'd still kill to see Tom in the late 70s or PJ in the early 90s.

Rosanne Cash is better now than she was, that's for sure.
