Rounding off a Saturday night in with this thing of absolute beauty. I have only been dipping my toes into the classical world for about half a year now and Mahler’s 2nd was one of two very first purchases based on nothing but the cover. (The other being Bach’s Cello Suites/Rostropovich vinyl box set solely because it had a Salvador Dali print as the cover) I knew nothing of the music contained within and owned no other classical pieces. Might as well start somewhere! Both were absolute revelations to me. And have been, by far, amongst the most perfect blind buys I have ever made, especially, considering my classical virgin status. The final movement in Mahler’s 2nd brought tears to my eyes and, a year on, it still remains such a powerful piece of music. Bach’s Cello Suites started an obsession to purchase other interpretations, although Rostropovich’s Remains my favourite by far. I like it’s almost punky rawness. Janos Starker’s nips at it’s heels though. I’m building up a nice, yet, modest collection and find myself leaning more to choral works, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor being a heavenly favourite.
Nice to see someone spinning these reels. I have a few Barclay-Crocker reels but have not set up my deck and the Dolby NR unit to play any of them ...
You should definitely come! Pretty amazing stuff. I was there for a couple hours and found 66 near mint LPs and 9 great box sets. Some real jewels too....
First listen to "Perotin" performed by The Hilliard Ensemble on ECM. I originally heard some of this music way back in the 80's on a David Munrow recording.
Now listening to "Aquilonis" performed by Trio Mediaeval on ECM. Music from the 12th century to modern day.

Wow, nice haul! I miss Hastings for $2.00 used classical vinyl. There are a lot of stores in the Dallas area, about a 2 hour drive, but I've heard their prices are very high.
First listen to "Verdi - Aida" performed by the Singverein Der Gesellschaft Der Musikfreunde and the Wiener Philharmoniker led by Herbert Von Karajan from the Decca Verdi box. Could they possibly have chosen a less attractive photo of her?
When I get around it, I will make a short video of my recent 'loot'. Seriously, they have a great selection. One of the owners told me he added between 5-6 thousand LPs to what was already there. So much fun to go through them, even though it involves dealing with all the dust. Yesterday there were only 2-3 gentlemen in my section, the rock and pop was as always 'sardined'. Hahaha. This morning my husband and I will go for a bike ride and stop by toget a few more, but since we are just bringing the backpacks and not the car....we will be a bit more limited as to how many we can carry. My husband also found a few gems amidst a lot of filler/ garbage LPs in the rock/pop section. Actually a couple original first pressings from the UK, Germany that somehow got lost or misplaced there, as they are quite valuable .
I do tend to favor Mass in b over the passions when it comes to the Bach choral works since it is a bit shorter ...
GM! Do you have a good number of recordings by Perahia? I only have one - Handel Suites. I heard some good things about his Bach keyboard works ...
EMI used to release many of his recordings on its budget Seraphim label and I have a few of those ...
Now playing CD56 - Cantatas Nos 185 - 187 from the following box for a first listen ... I will not consider another Complete Bach Cantatas box until I am through with this box ...
