Rhino Records Summer of Love issues, July 2017

In the UK, my copy of Triangle lacks a tip-on sleeve and the Love LP is in a paper Elektra inner sleeve: both outer sleeves state 'Manufactured in the EU' ... very happy with the sound of both releases ...

 

I filed Love away... but I think besides the poly-lined sleeve the LP came in, that it had a repro Elektra sleeve from the era tucked in the jacket. I'll bet they skipped the poly lined and just put the LP in the repro sleeve.

 

That's a nice touch. Rhino often does a great job doing the original details correctly.

 

Same here in Germany. I would have loved to have a tip-on sleeve, too...

I'm hoping maybe that might indicate they have tip-on jackets. Rhino sometimes does this, but not always.
In the US, the tip-on jackets are really nice thick card stock.

 

Sometimes, these tip-on jackets are available in Europe too. The Rhino Ray Charles records and the John Coltrane Monos for example.

But the Beau Brummels' "Triangle" not only has no tip-on jacket but also is made of very thin cardboard. But in the other it sounds very nice. So all in all I'm satisfied.

I think Triangle is an awful album, which is sad because I really like their earlier hits. Oh well, at least I can save myself $20.

 

These records sound very good (Love and The Young Rascals). Rhino have done a great job. Very reasonable prices here in the UK. Both records are virtually flawless too. Tempted now to get The Grateful Dead. Not going to get The Association as have a near mint 1st press.

 

Yes, I bought the Giant Steps Mono last week in Canada, and the vinyl was pressed at Optimal in Germany.
I think the Coltrane monos are only 1 version, done in the EU.

 

I gave it a listen via the internet. I didn't like the vocals so not for me, even though the period is one of my favourites.

 

That shows the construction quite well.

The best known USA printer for high quality reissue jackets is Stoughton in California.
They print for Analog Productions, Rhino, Mobile Fidelity, Music Matters, and many others.

Nice pics Mazzy. I got Arlo, VF and Electric Prunes in today's mail.

All have tip-on jackets and same hype stickers as your pics show. But, sadly, the jackets were very damaged in transit and they are going back to the source. You'll have to let us know if the mastering is the same...

 

a pretty good representation of that summer, but i am trying to figure out a couple of these that don't seem to fit

jethro tull - living in the past - seems more like early 70's and had nothing to do with the summer of love

john mayall - uh, no

spencer davis - '66 i think, and not really summer of love-ish kind of tune

mitch ryder - also '66 or '65 and much like spencer davis not real summer of love-ish

jeff beck - uh, no again

bread - there are much better tunes by them to fit the theme and bread didn't even release anything until '69

I just got the new Summer of Love Monkees compilation today on vinyl. First off, yes it is an odd collection. As has been discussed, it's an odd choice of songs that really kind of misses if you're going to present The Monkees psychedelic side since some tracks clearly arent.

The other sloppy points, Pleasant Valley Sunday isn't the single version as stated on the cover and label. It's the stereo version from the 4th album.

Words also comes from the lp master as one lone la from Cuddly Toy from Davy can be heard right before the songs starts.

On the good points, the vinyl actually sounds really nice! Side one has the stamped Mastered by Capitol in the run off groove. I was surprised at how nice the lp sounds. Nice and full but not bright or overly pumped up sound. Very pleasant.

And hands down one of the best covers ever on a Monkees compilation album.

Even though its a strange and un needed collection it's is nevertheless a fun listen flaws and all. Too bad it doesn't include Aunties Municipal Court though, major flaw.

 

Me too, stereo is the way to go for Triangle, which I regard as The Beau Brummel's master work!

 

I wish Vanilla Fudge was stereo, Rhino already did a mono issue. The original stereo is one of the noisiest ATCO/Bell Sound pressed albums of the era! I've never found a quiet stereo pressing of this album anywhere!

 

Too bad they left Writing Wrongs off, that's one of the most psychedelic Monkees track ever!

 

Yeah, I wish they had also included the TV version of Words from Missing Links 2 as it has more of a psychedelic feel than the redone version.

Oh well, at least the cover is fantastic lol!

 

Same here. Finally snagged one, and it's clearly a folddown, so why do we need a reissue of a folded stereo release?

WILDFLOWERS was also a fold from what I understand. This idea of making them mono just to be able to say "mono" is hipster commercialism gone wacky.

 

is the Electric Prunes mono?

 

Have a really clean stereo copy on the gold label, are any of the reissues an improvement to you? I have no major complaints with my copy I just wonder if there is anything I'm missing out on with other versions
