Lots of stuff on this page (34) of the thread of not long-forgotten tapes but well regarded and well loved tapes.

I bet you're right, that was the one of the four I didn't remember, has "JAPAN" on the shell. I can remember using ToneMaster before I could afford to buy good ones. Didn't ever buy any Kmart tapes but I remember them coming in 3-packs at the checkout area.

I had some Kmart tapes but don't know if we bought 'em or if they came from a relative who sent cassette "letters". I think she mostly used Certrons, though...

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

I used a few Kmart cassettes and they were pretty durable. Didn't sound so hot, though, but they served my purposes at the time.

Not the best photos, but I thought I'd dig through some of the tapes I have and see what brands I've got. These vary in vintage from the 80s to just a few years ago before I got a CD player in my car.

Love the cassette case, look for these all the time at thrift stores. And the Supertape is cool too :)

Cassettes were a great record/playback media in their time. When i worked in a record store in the 80's we had a hard time keeping stock of Maxell cassettes..they just flew out the door...a lot of folks transferrd their lp's to cassette and in most cases made mix tapes...which were great at parties.
The images posted here bring back fond memories...thanks for sharing.

Those BASF LH-EI tapes were not very good but were super cheap.

Yeah, in my youth I would take whatever tape I could get my hands on. I eventually settled into a TDK / Maxell groove. :)

Oh yeah, Tracs and Kmart's old tapes. Brings back memories - those were among the first cassettes I think I ever used, to record letters to a cousin in Oregon and episodes of Space:1999 on my old tape recorder, circa '76.

I am continually amazed at how good those tapes sounded for what they were.

Oh my God, I had to check to make sure I hadn't signed onto this forum years ago and forgotten about it. I could have TOTALLY written this as I did exactly the same thing for the same reason!

I remember about 1979, recording from a local station KEZR--The Rolls Of Rock--I listened long enough to realize they played pre-recorded tapes. I eventually was able to "predict" what song would come next and be ready with the recorder to get the whole song. "Goodbye Stranger", "Roundabout", "Fantasy", "No Mercy" and others. They were even really good about not talking over the intros.

I remember owning a few of those 45s. I traded with my older brother's friend for Convention '72. Wish I remembered what I traded away.

Unfortunately, the photo doesn't capture the shiny gold very well, but I had never seen one of these before*:

    * Apologies if someone had already posted one of these and I just overlooked it. :)

I have examples of all these tapes save for the MX and the LN 8-Track.

Great to see this again. Nice thread. I have thousands of tapes somewhere in the basement.
Maybe I should dig them again sometime to digitalize the stuff onto my PC.
