Sad it took 5 pages to see him mentioned, but he is a tad reclusive. But he is also prolific!

Been around since the 70s, but from the 90s on he has gone predominantly instrumental. Big array of styles and techniques. Dreamy, psychedelic, artful. Crazy titles and cool retro-futuristic cover art.

This will take you to the Dreamsville Department Store. Ample samples. Discs and downloads.

Plus another vote for Sonny Sharrock!
"Ask the Ages" I think was his last one and it's right up there with his early albums for me.

  16. With the possible exception of Santana and Jeff Beck, I wouldn't consider any of those to be rock albums.

I know that but remember the title of the thread: Instrumental Electric Guitar Music. I think that those albums could be included.

    Paul Speer:

He has done a lot of soundtrack and session work, and is perhaps best known for his collaborations with David Lanz on several "New Age" (I've always hated that label) albums. He has also released several solo projects, all of which are worth hearing. I'd recommend "Axe Inferno" (more Rock) and "Oculus" (more atmospheric) as good places to start.

I'm listening to it now on Tidal (lossless) -- it's really good. Reminds me: how could I have forgotten Friends of Dean Martinez -- just get their whole catalog. They're somewhere between David Gilmour at his slowest and most evocative, El Dorado, post-rock, and Cowboy Junkies (for some reason, they both make me think of the desert).

Not really fusion, prog, or pyrotechnics, though. Just delicious tone playing beautiful evocative music.

Back to guitar hero wankery: Warmen. Bernd Steidl. There was a whole label dedicated to this stuff in the ... early 90s? I forget.

Once upon a time, the Raybeats would have been up front on page one of a thread like this. Here they are covering Link Wray (and a cool video to boot):

Their first LP, Guitar Beat, is a classic.
