    Out on Dec 8.

From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER - an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.

I love his work, but this trailer doesn't look good to me. I'm not seeing how this setup can produce a compelling story - govt lab housing a monster, I dunno, doesn't seem like something he'd come up with.

Anything by Guillermo del Toro is an automatic, first day viewing. Doubly so if he both wrote and directed it. He's one of the all-time great directors.

I agree. Well, I'm not sure I'm ready to call del Toro one of the all-time great yet, but he's certainly one of my favorite contemporary directors. This looks good to me. I'm not familiar at all with the lead actress. Which is fine.

  6. Thanks for the tip. Gunna be on the look out for that.

I'd have to re-watch a number of his films to make a truly cogent case for him, but for me he entered the top ranks with Pan's Labyrinth. Directors have won acclaim for films that were nowhere near as brave, powerful and devastating as that one. His only terrible film was Pacific Rim, and by the standards of "giant robot versus giant sea creatures" films, it was the least terrible (Colossal was brilliant and excluded simply because that was not the real theme of the film.)

I loved "Pacific Rim". Total fun. I have never warmed to "Cronos" and "Mimic" was bad, but he didn't have much control there. I definitely agree with you on "Pan's Labyrinth", though.

Sally Hawkins, who plays the lead, is a wonderful actress. She starred in the excellent Happy-Go-Lucky (2008).

It basically looks like, "a very plain woman falls in love with The Creature from the Black Lagoon," but there's a lot they can do with this idea.

It took me a few minutes to get the fine actor Benicio del Toro out of my head when I first read this thread. That's how long it's been since I saw one of Guillermo's movies. Looking forward to it. I have enjoyed all of his films, especially Pan's Labyrinth. His commentary on that film was highly entertaining and informative. Possibly the best DVD film commentary I've ever seen.

Exactly what I was thinking. Played by the same actor.

My wife reminded me that Sally Hawkins is in another film that is in the art houses at the moment - Maudie, about the Canadian artist Maud Lewis, with Ethan Hawke. It's the sort of film she sees, that most people aren't aware exist, because they don't have a budget for TV and Web ads.

She was especially delighted that Canadian treasure Mary-Margaret O'Hara's Dear Darling was on the soundtrack.

According to my wife, from reviews she's read, Sally Hawkins does not speak in the film.
