Any current Criterion must-haves?

I just found out Barnes & Noble is having their annual Criterion sale -- I got the Qatsi trilogy because I revisit the first one every several years, and have thought, "I really should watch the other two more than the once..." I also got Moonrise Kingdom, and was surprised to learn that The Grand Budapest Hotel (my personal favourite Wes Anderson) is not on Criterion! I'll pick up Inside Llewyn Davis when I find it, and I'm waffling on The Complete Monterey Pop and the Guillermo del Toro collection (Cronos/Pan's Labyrinth/Devil's Backbone -- I've seen, and like, the latter two -- is Cronos any good?). I have the 50 DVD Kurosawa box that I still haven't finished, so I should probably pass on any Kurosawa, even though I'm tempted by Yojimbo, and I kind of really want Ikiru. Godzilla?

Other than that one piece of advice, I don't know what to tell you. Criterion has such a vast, varied catalogue that it's difficult to recommend specific titles without knowing more about your tastes. You'd be better off scanning the catalogue on their website, whittling it down to a shortlist within your budget, then reading a few reviews to find out which ones are for you.

 

If you're into Noir, the recent release of The Asphalt Jungle is well worth having.

 

I just picked up, watched and enjoyed One-Eyed Jacks. I need to pick up a copy of The Seventh Seal before the B&N 50% sale ends.

 

The Godzilla Criterion is very good, I think you will enjoy it.

Kurosawa's "Dreams" is visually ravishing and, being a multi-story film, should appeal to people who want to check out the master without indulging in one of his samurai epics.
For foodies, "Tampopo", now finally on Criterion BR, is an easy recommendation.

 

So total haul ended up being: Qatsi trilogy, Guillermo del Toro trilogy (Cronos/Pan's Labyrinth/Devil's Backbone), Godzilla, Blood Simple, Inside Llewyn Davis, Heart of a Dog (I adore Laurie Anderson and everything she does, so this is one of the few I haven't seen yet), Seventh Seal and Moonrise Kingdom, and stopped there, despite being tempted by many others, I just didn't feel comfortable buying this many disks when I went without for so long (the last three I purchased before this spending spree were: Under the Skin, Ex Machina, and Anomalisa), so I just had to stop somewhere. Appreciate all the information, feel free to keep posting, I'm sure others appreciate all the lists.

In a previous sale picked up a couple Chaplin (Gold Rush, Modern Times, The Kid), and should get those Harold Lloyd titles soon: Safety First, The Freshman

Kurasawa's film Dreams is a really beautiful release, with a nice Special feature from Japanese television "Making of Dreams" program.

 

When does the sale end?
