Critics Officially Give Up After Watching 'The Emoji Movie'

    and here...
The Emoji Movie is Inside Out crossed with a Sony commercial and dunked in toxic ooze

    and here...
'The Emoji Movie' has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes — and critics say it 'can't escape its own idiocy'

...and those are just a sampling! Last I saw, it's also averaging a 1.5 out of 10 on IMDb.

I am reminded of this line from Roger Ebert's classic review of "Battlefield Earth":

"I watched it in mounting gloom, realizing I was witnessing something historic, a film that for decades to come will be the punch line of jokes about bad movies."

    Film Review: ‘The Emoji Movie’

The filmmakers behind Valerian must be relieved that they're now out of the spotlight.

The animated adventure took a lot of heat from critics — reaction ranged from meh to horrible, earning its current Rotten Tomatoes score of 8 percent. Its B CinemaScore is also quite low for an animated movie, meaning audiences aren’t particularly enjoying the movie either.

T.J. Miller plays the central character, a “Meh” emoji who has “no filter,” meaning his expression can change. The same cannot be said for the rest of the cast, which includes James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Christina Aguilera, and Sofia Vergara. Oh yeah, and Sir Patrick Stewart plays “Poop.”

“We’re thrilled,” said Sony’s marketing chief Josh Greenstein. “The audience has spoken and made the ‘Emoji Movie’ a family event.”

No, I wouldn't say that. It didn't have a great opening weekend, but it didn't bomb.

As we discussed earlier, it "only" needs about $125m to $150m worldwide to turn a profit. Boxofficemojo estimates it'll make $60m-$70m US, so another $60m-$70m overseas makes it profitable...

All sev...right, King also wrote The Wind Through the Keyhole, which is a midquel; all eight books? Have fun!

Speaking of Stephen King adaptations, you are aware IT is only the half of the book set in the past only moved up two decades because Stranger Things.

Should one not read all 8 books? What's the story there?

  18. Don't bother reading the books to follow the movie. Based on the trailer the movie has very little in common with the books.

Honestly can't imagine they'd attempt a "Beetlejuice" sequel without Keaton.

A remake/reboot without him? Definitely. But a sequel? That'd be a recipe for disaster without Keaton, methinks...

Keaton is Beetlejuice just like Downey is Iron Man. He made what we love about the character.

Agree, except I'd put Keaton's Beetlejuice on a higher plane because he originated the character. Iron Man existed for decades before Downey played the part, but there was no Beetlejuice prior to the 1988...

I totally agree -- Emoji Movie will make money, because it was pretty cheap to make. It ain't gonna be Minions ($1 billion+), but financially, it'll do OK.

There's a separate thread on the forum about Stephen King's Dark Tower series, and it's an interesting discussion. My contention is that it's almost an impossible book to film, because it's so all over the place: a Western that takes place in another dimension with a gunfighter who's basically Clint Eastwood's character from Fistful of Dollars, in a world with unspeakable horrors, putting together a strange band of followers who have to help him prevent a mysterious Tower from falling, which will basically end all of reality in the entire Universe. It's fantasy, it's sci-fi, it's horror, it's action, it's adventure, it's a black comedy, it's a buddy movie, and yet it somehow ties into dozens of Stephen King's other stories. Very, very hard to pull that off.

  25. The Dark Tower series could be adapted if HBO wanted to throw a serious Game of Thrones treatment at the property. I hear this movie version is an utter abomination that disregards many key elements of the novels.
