Neil Young Plans Online Archive With Full Catalog, Unreleased Music Neil Young Plans Online Archive With Full Catalog, Unreleased Music
This quote leads me to believe we will still be waiting... and waiting. "Unreleased album art is simply penciled in so you can where unreleased albums will appear on the timeline, once they are completed."
$100 a year IS cheap. That's competitive with Google Play, I think. But the question is, how long before the plug gets pulled on this service too?
I think it's safe to assume, as others have, that there will be no more massive Neil Young Archives box sets. And I'm ok with that. The problem with Archives Vol. 1 and is that it couldn't be easily updated as new material was discovered. Sure, there were a few downloads, but nothing like what will be possible with a dedicated Archives web site. And for those who want physical product, I'm sure the album reissues and live archival sets will continue, and now we'll also see some previously unreleased albums like Hitchhiker, Homegrown and Toast. I just hope Neil's performances will get as much attention as his studio recordings. Maybe we'll eventually see a separate "live archives" site devoted to audio and video concert recordings. By the way, I don't expect this to be free. Perhaps there will be a free tier, but you'll probably need to subscribe in order to stream in hi res, and perhaps pay even more in order to download music for offline listening. And I'm ok with that. I certainly hope the archivists for the Dylan museum are taking note. This should provide a good example for how the Dylan archives can be made available for the public. Same for the Springsteen archives.
I'd love for Neil to sorta follow the Dead model with a subscription service (I love physical media) and box sets and other individual releases. One can dream.
Box sets, Pono, Archive subscription, at this rate this song/video seems more literal and less ironic every day.
I think you've got it the wrong way wrong as far as Bob's concerned. I'd much rather Neil have followed Bob's route with lots of Bootleg Series in the physical domain with still more to come rather than a splatter gun approach ending up with a website offering, well we're still not exactly sure, & with Neil's track record who knows what'll appear.
Small burst then the novelty wears off and the format is abandoned for his next temporary obsession...

The only known pro-recordings from the Tonight's The Night period are from The Roxy. I don't recall anything else being recorded
I'm sure I've heard Neil mention the Rainbow as being on the slate. An interview I think but maybe Shakey. See if I can find it...
That'd be great if they had something from later in the tour,l. Shakeup book mentions Roxy being recorded but nothing else. I'd be happy if Neil would crap and get off the pot.
I was actually thinking about this yesterday...I'd love to see a 'Volume 2' and even a 'Volume 3' of 'Road Rock'. Just would be a very typical 'Neil Young' thing to do. The 'Music In Head' tour was great.
The Archives are coming - It's going to be a big, beautiful box, and it's not going to cost a thing - You're all going to love it Crosby is actually going to pay for it. Crosby is going to pay for the box, and it will be fantastic. It's going to be so easy. All the music will all be free. And you all will get tired of all the free music. Now on the Pono... this whole Pono thing - The people who talk about Pono, and blu-ray, and the downloads - it's the biggest witch hunt. Pono got three and a half million more downloads than ITunes and Amazon combined. Pono was the biggest app in history. You all should look into that. And the Archives, they are going to be beautiful, folks - and Crosby will pay for them. It will be a big beautiful, box, and you will love it. Unless it's not a box. But you know what I'm saying - You will love it. It's going to be first class.
Ridiculous assumption. No offence DVD-audio lasted 5 minutes. Blu-ray ("it is not going away...don't say I didn't warn you") lasted 5 minutes. Pono lasted 2 minutes. You can't make assumptions on the future based on what is happening now. That's not the way Neil Young works. Springsteen already has a very extensive Archive of his live performances available on the internet, which has been done in a user-friendly, maintainable and commercially-viable way. Perhaps Neil could learn a few lessons from him! Dylan's Bootleg Series also features significantly higher-quality packaging and accompanying documents than Neil's individual Archive releases. Compare Another Self Portrait with Bluenote Cafe and you'll see what I mean.
