The one Monteith joke I remember very well was after Pete Rose ended up in jail; "I heard Pete Rose was traded last night..for a pack of cigarettes."

Vareity shows were then in their last decade..though..they had a long and very successful history going back to 193s0s-40s raido and tv..I regard the American Idol/America's got Talent thing to be a variant of that, and then in the 40s-60s the talent shows..

Were they as bad as "The Committee" on ABC's Music Scene? The worst kind of unfunny.

Glad I didn't own a television in 1977! I obviously missed nothing essential
    to my cultural enrichment.

Shields and Yarnell were very popular in the 70's I was aware of them as a child. They guest starred in the season 3 Wonder Woman episode, "Formicida". Yarnell played the title character who could control ants with her mind.

My wife and I (who are obviously old geezers in our 70s now) used to enjoy the hell out of the Shields and Yarnell Show! Can it be 4 decades ago already?

This post reminded me of the attempt to copy the movie Animal House on television. In the fall after Animal House was released, each of the three networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) had its own frat-type show. ABC had Delta House which was a continuation of Animal House (some of the actors from the movie reprised their role in the series). Now, it is probably best remembered for featuring Michelle Pfieffer in one of her early roles. None of the three shows lasted long.

I remember it well. I was 9 and it was the first tv show I remember as being terrible.

I purchased a CD a few years back of a mime street performer in Chicago. I never was a Mime person, but he was quite entertaining...so I'd figure I'd buy one of his cds. The track list was mostly "showtunes". Anyway, I remember being frustrated driving back to Ohio. I popped the cd in and no music. Switched from track to track....nothing. Must have been a defective CD

Yarnell was also Dot Matrix in "Spaceballs"!
Just thought I'd add that to this thread!
    Of course, NOT the 'voice'.

This reminds me of what Joe Strummer says in "Mystery Train", when someone says, "DANGER, Will Robinson!"
Joe: "I must've missed that bit of American culture."

I actually took a miming class (against my will) at 171 Cedar Street, the Corning, NY arts center where my mother taught ceramics.

I can't even begin to think of who on the current scene has enough crossover appeal to host a 70's-style variety show, but it might be interesting if somebody tried.

Isn't "forced mime classes" one of the things forbidden under the Geneva Conventions?

I'm 46, so I'm familiar with the names Shields and Yarnell. Before this thread, I had no idea exactly who they were & why they were famous, I only knew that they were famous in the '70s.

    Mimes?!?!?! They were freakin' mimes?!?!?!
I know the '70's were a different time, but I had no idea that a couple of mimes got that famous.

I remember seeing them on various different shows at the time, but I'd forgotten all about them until this thread. Bizarre.

As for the Kelly Monteith references above, I had a soft spot for his show in the early 80s that aired in the US on the A&E network. That was the one where he had a wife and broke the fourth wall half the time between sitcom-like plots. I think I just liked it because it was different from anything else on TV that I knew of.
