Digitizing your vinyl - Which ones did you do today?

Just a 45; both sides of the Arthur and Booker single on Chess.

1) Audio Recorder for Free - recording
2) Creative Labs Wave Studio - copying or splitting individual tracks, and inserting silence at beginnings and ends
3) Trader's Little Helper - fixes issues with truncated files
4) WinAmp - converts flac files back to wav files
5) Audacity - occasionally I split tracks to use only the "better" channel of my stereo recording of a mono track
6) Creative Labs Wave Studio - manual individual repairs of the worst of the pops and ticks, using sequential 50% volume decreases to re-sphape the offending spikes, and a final overall volume increase
6) ClickRepair - automated repair of what remains
7) Sony's Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 - a little tasteful EQ

 

Nothing today, but coincidently Nick Lowe's Labour of Lust is on my short stack of to-do's.

 

Is this a single workflow, or is it your toolbox (just using one or a few of these on a given project)? If you use them all in one workflow, seems like a lot of effort!

 

Worst case workflow, but actually pretty much standard and all "free" software, with the exception of ClickRepair and the Sony software.

And occasionally I need to go back and fix things. depending on how they sound on the big systems.

 

I've been needledropping for over 10 years. I always put my current system in the comment section of the Metadata because it has evolved over time.
I'm not sure how Many albums I've done but it shows over 16,000 songs.

I've been doing the Humble Pie box set. I just use a Music Hall usb-1 with an upgraded cartridge from LP Gear and Audacity. Dividing the tracks is easy and I set the recording level low then bring it up with the normalize effect. I ultrasonically clean all my albums before recording and I have to say the cds I've made sound awesome. I may never by another cd again as long as the vinyl is an original pressing or a well reviewed re-issue. BTW the Humble Pie box set sounds wonderful.

 

Someone recently gave me a rip of the new Sgt Pepper LP.

that is a lot of programs and tools, i use a few also:

1) audacity 1.x for capture
2) sony soundforge 6.0 - anything past that is too bloated (also, i'm on windows 7/8) -> with noise reduction, and click and repair tools
3) flac frontend for flac -> wav
4) winamp 2.x for listening to mp3 from time to time
5) lfe , frontend for wav to mp3

There are still too many good albums out there which are not available on CD...or the CD versions sound bad (badly sourced from vinyl etc.), so there is no other way to get it right as to do my own transfers

Sadly i don't own a TT with a usb. The last one i remeber doing was Mac Demarco's Salad Days Demos. It was back when it wasn't on CD and I still prefer the ones I made to the CD version. Much smoother sounding.

 

I know it's not vinyl, but I ripped cassette copies of Joe Walsh's There Goes the Neighborhood and George Clinton's Computer Games to my laptop and phone. Most vinyl copies I've seen were in poor shape, and that's why I went with cassettes instead. The prices that these CDs go for are absolutely ridiculous, especially the Joe Walsh album.

I have a few i've done myself

 

Slightly OT, but I just made a digital copy from an old cassette. I recorded Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson at the Cabaret Dec. 16th, 1989 off the radio. It's been buried in my closet for all these years. I decided to transfer to CD. I use a Tascam CD recorder which I use to record onto CD-RW. I transfer to my laptop and process with Goldwave and then burn to CD-R with iTunes.

And Modern Guilt.

Most recent vinyl digitization:

Intensive Heat - S/T (1982). Semi-obscure 80's boogie-funk. Never legitimately released on CD.

 

Over Xmas dinner, our older (31 yo) son told us he has been going to get-togethers where he and his musician friends are playing with '70s vintage modular synthesizers, which led us to turn him onto Switched On Bach. Which in turn led me to digitizing that and two other Walter/Wendy Carlos albums the other day...

Sounded Good!

Been buying original-release LPs for $2-5 each - Lyle Mays, Ralph Towner, Oregon, early Pat Metheny, old rock - at several Seattle used vinyl stores: Easy Street, Everyday Music; Daybreak and Jive Time in Fremont... which fills a dual purpose of filling gaps in my record collection and having better quality raw material for my digital archives. Condition has been surprisingly good for the most part.

Since starting this thread, I haven't changed the eqpt or the workflow that I described in the first post, but I am totally open to improvements... I've tried a couple of noise/scratch filter software applications but none of them were satisfactory to me (or I lacked the patience...), so as of now I'm still removing pops and tics manually

 

Going to attempt a 1967 US Mono Magical Mystery Tour tonight that I picked up dirt cheap at a thrift a few months ago.
I'm not knowledgeable enough on Beatles pressings so i'm not sure what I have, it has a 'starburst' type emblem in the wax (*)
