Pretty long break in song with Day Tripper and Satisfaction riffs overlapping.

For most people who might not know which song it is, it's this one and at the end they simultaneously fit Day Tripper and Satisfaction riffs together which I always thought was pretty damn cool.
Not sure about royalties though. You gotta think if Keith Richards and John Lennon heard the song they would probably give it the thumbs up for being pretty creative in doing that imo

Sorry, changed a note in the Day Tripper riff (and different keys), so no royalties...

I doubt it. I don't think anybody cared. Great song, album, and band, though. One of my all time favorites.

Skyhooks did it before them with "Million Dollar Riff", and even managed to work in "Smoke On The Water."

Oh man, thanks for posting that. Just before I left England to move back home 6 years ago I bought a Skyhooks compilation and I totally forgot I had it. I haven't even listened to it yet. I'll have to get it out this weekend.

Great April Wine tune as well.

An amazing underrated band. I was listening to Harder Faster and I saw this thread. I recently tried to play many of the guitar parts from this album and realized how inventive they were. Why are there no bands like this anymore?

I agree with your take on how KR and JL would react.
This guitar arrangements in this song are top notch.

While we are on the subject, is there a musical term to describe completely different melodies blend together perfectly?

Isn't a segue about transition? One seguing to another?
I think galley is asking about melodies at the same time.

Interpolating? That's when they fly in a completely separate melody in the middle of the song.

Skip Spence put the "Sunshine Of Your Love" riff into the ending of "War In Peace". Unknown if he had to pay royalties...

Yes put the "Daytripper" riff into their cover of "Every Little Thing", before Skyhooks did it.

Can guitar riffs be copyrighted? If not, then there is no copyright problem.

Or maybe they are considered okay to copy as they fall under "Fair Use".

That's the ticket - even IF The Beatles or The Stones would have bothered. FWIW, April Wine was a great Canadian band

By itself, merely changing keys would offer no protection in a copyright infringement suit, if one were to be brought. Unless Vanilla Ice is the presiding judge...

The Spirit -LedZeppelin suit went to court (although Spirit did not win) with way less similarities

Before corporations took over the music industry this was called "homage" and was a time honored tradition in song writing (and the other arts). Now that that money is the bottom line of everything in our society it's called "copyright infringement."

  22. April Wine was a staple growing up in Nova Scotia. They played here constantly in the mid 70s, as they started off here in Halifax. Very talented band. My Mum's friend is even related to Myles Goodwyn.

I too picked up that cd years ago for whatever reason and was surprised at the quality of the songs and the guitar players. Tasty solo here at 2:08 and lengthy Freebird style outro starting at 3:58. These guys were really good.

In Roxy Music's "Re-Make/Re-Model" the bass player quotes "Day Tripper" in his break late in the song. Probably too quick a reference to cause any copyright worries.
