I would have liked to add a few more.

 

Outlaw Josey Wales - I can watch either the whole movie or just pick certain scenes, like Missouri boat ride, seems like it is always on tv. "Dying ain't much of a living"
Apocalypse Now - this and Platoon are my favorite war movies. "Charlie don't surf"
Young Frankenstein - poor Teri Garr, it was her first major role and to have that level of comic genius, never to be surpassed. "Roll, roll, roll in ze hay"
French Connection - I was mesmerized by this movie as a kid. Sequel is almost as good too. May have the best movie car chase scene even though it was 40 years ago.
Three Days of the Condor - Redford and Dunaway are fantastic. One of the best opening 20 min of any movie. "I just read books."
Rocky and Jaws are great films but assumed everyone would pick them so I will give them honorable mention.

These are the top five titles I watch repeatedly from this period so I suppose they qualify as favorites. Other than male director I'm not sure if there's a common denominator.

I can not simply list five favorites. The 1970s is my favorite decade for films. The Exorcist is my favorite film ;however, the rest are in no particular order.

Jaws - Rewatched it recently, and it still holds up. We're gonna need a bigger boat!

Manhattan - Love Annie Hall, but this gets the edge. Beautiful cinematography.

Star Wars - If you didn't grow up in the 70s, it's hard to describe what a force (pun intended!) the original trilogy was in our lives. Always looked forward to getting the Sears catalog and going to the toy section (after checking out the bra section first, of course ).

The Godfather Pt II - Tough call between the two films*, but I love the running two storylines.

Animal House - It wasn't over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, and this movie is still great fun.

*There is no Godfather Pt III. No, there's not! I'm covering my ears now...I'm not listening to you!
