How did Michael Beihn not go on to be a big star from his films with Cameron?

What a fun movie. Ed Harris is always enjoyable.

I just watched the theatrical version on HBO a few months back. The movie is definitely more impact with this scene from the Director's Cut:

Thread title is misleading, as no release date has been given...

Hoping the hi-def transfer is well done with lots of detail, so we can really enjoy gazing long into The Abyss.

    ;) :D

I know what you mean, and I'm afraid that it looks like we're not going to get any news again this year.

And I think neither the next one. Cameron is too busy doing "the Steroids Smurfs 2", sorry I meant Avatar 2. I'm surprised he had time to supervise the Terminator 2 scan, restoring and 3D conversion.

You guys could always record it to DVR from pay tv.

Can't remember where I recorded it from, but was HBO or one of those channels.

I have watched the theatrical release via hbo go. It was fine, but I'd like a proper blu ray for inreased audio and visual quality as well as the special edition scenes.

  11. 2017 is over half way over and still no movie on BD.

What? There've been many, many movies on Blu-ray in 2017! This is crazy talk!

Oh - you meant no "Abyss" BD! Never mind! ;) :D

didn't James also direct "True Lies".

Cameron Teases "Aliens 3D," "Abyss" Blu-ray - Dark Horizons

Finally, he also spoke about the long in the works “The Abyss” and “True Lies” Blu-rays. Both films only exist as poor-quality DVDs and so-so quality broadcasts. Both have recently been remastered (Abyss for 4K apparently) and many have been keen to know when we’ll finally see them. Cameron says:

“Working on that. The True Lies Blu-ray and The Abyss Blu-ray have sort of fallen off my ‘to do’ list getting the not one, not two but four “Avatar” sequels stood up and going. But now that that’s happened, I can actually take care of business. So that’s coming, absolutely.”

About time, my DVD copy has been sat on my `Blu ray Wanted` shelf for years.
Now how about `Adam`s Family Values` on Blu ray?

A little surprising they'd release the first film but not the sequel.

Then again, "Values" kinda bombed, so I guess they figured there's not much demand...

That's a bit of an exaggeration.... the DVDs of both films look fine. I'm sure a Blu-ray upgrade would look great too, but there's nothing wrong with what we've got currently.

Are there anamorphic widescreen dvds of the abyss and true lies?

I'm not sure about that.... but in terms of picture quality, they're both totally watchable. :)

He certainly didn't attain "mega-star" status, but I think he's still fairly well-known. He also seems to have worked pretty consistently, as his IMDb page credits him in over 100 film and TV appearances. I think he's a great actor and it's always a pleasant surprise to seem him pop up in a movie you didn't know he was in. Aside from the 3 James Cameron films, I've also seen him in:

    The Seventh Sign (1988)
    Navy Seals (1990)
    Tombstone (1993)
    Jade (1995)
    The Rock (1996)
    Asteroid (1997)
    Cherry Falls (2000)
    The Art of War (2000)
    Planet Terror (2007)
    The Divide (2011)

I also remember being surprised to see him in the video game Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, back in the days when I used to play PC games.
Apparently he also has an uncredited appearance in Grease !!

No, there's no anamorphic DVDs for "Lies" or "Abyss" - at least not in the US.

In the US, we have the same "Abyss" that came out in March 2000 and the same "Lies" that came out in May 1999!

Also disagree that they're "watchable" - especially not on modern 16X9 TVs.

I watched "Abyss" on a 60" plasma not long ago and the result was ugly:

    The Abyss (1989)

Haven't seen the "Lies" DVD in a long time, but given that it was subpar on a 36-inch tube TV, I imagine it'd look much worse on my 65" OLED!

    True Lies (1994)

Yes, that always confused me, why is the first film available but not the second, I always thought that they were BOTH really good films.

Film quality doesn't matter when it comes to releases - if the studio doesn't think it'll sell, they don't release it.

So I assume they simply thought "Values" wouldn't move enough units to be worth the effort...

    The Abyss.
Some of the ships models fx collapsing look el cheapo.
But .. For a 30 year old movie it excels still. Also,
Ed Harris really delivers, tremendous acting.
