Milan, there are many great Clarke Boland Big Band and smaller group sessions with great work by Shihab. This one is a beautiful session I really love: Sahib Shihab: Summer Dawn (1963) Rearward RE (updated) Recently I picked up four Ultra HQ-CD reissues of Coltrane Impulse! material. Though I wish they had chosen different masterings for several, the pressings playback with real nuance and dynamics, I've been impressed.
With my obsession for music of this vintage, the JPJ Mosaic was a no-brainer, buy-on-preorder set. I think it's an incredible collection. A lot of it was probably new to me, so I'm not sure if that's the case with you. And at 6 discs it obviously covers a lot more ground (1921 -1943) than the disc you were listening to. But there's just so much here. And the variety makes it a "play it all day" sort of set to me. I do remember there being a few mediocre cuts (not every blues singer was Bessie Smith!) but I just love all music of this era, so my threshold is largely impenetrable. Plus, being a huge Fats Waller fan, the fact that I can hear this much of the master James P Johnson, while diving into the book and all that, is just unbelievable. Oh, and the sound is crazy.
"My Brother the Wind Vol. 1" the new, expanded, reissue on Cosmic Myth out this week. I was away from home all day yesterday traveling to and from and visiting one of my sister-in-laws in Narwalk, OH and this package was left on my porch by UPS before a heavy downpour of rain occurred. Though the digipak was sealed. . . it was soaked and falling apart. Even the underside of the cd was soaked. So I ordered a new copy and am listening to the CD but can't read the notes or discographic info. This is very different from Vol. 2 which I have on Evidence. . .very free jazz and freaky Moog. Sound is very good, which is what I expect going forward with these new reissues from the Sun Ra archives.

Thanks for your insights. Unlike you I'm not obsessed with music of this vintage and Harlem stride piano in larger doses fails to hold my attention. I'm also having a hard time listening to Fats Waller, especially the comic aspects of his music bother me. I have four of the JSP Waller sets but I never play them.

This Shihab looks like something I need and in researching it I found the only version on Amazon US was on the Skokiaan label and I was going to ask if that's the version you have. Upon further digging I'm guessing not as that label looks to be a PD label out of Europe somewhere. Pity, they do vinyl too and have some interesting reissues. Might you link me to this specific version? THX.

I bought both the RSD LP and the CD and the CD does sound quite good. I'd not want to pass on the packaging and the booklet, which are quite nice.
Agree, the Monk and the Wes with Wynton are both excellent. I would grab them on CD if you can't track down the vinyl for the packaging.
NP: Keith Jarrett - Belonging. There are some really nice piano solo's and drumming on side 2. Garbarek gets a little out there on Solstice also.
