Was Oasis the biggest band in the world?

Good taste.

 

Not so much I don't rate the debut but I can almost hear something I've heard before on it! Noel didn't stop being a thieving magpie & an established songwriter until What's the Story and Be Here Now. I bought the next album which didn't impress and got off board at that point. Even the subsequent singles wher'nt enough to make me dip my toes again. In my opinion of course as a casual fan!
It's interesting to note that the expanded reissues appear to have come to a grinding halt after Be Here Now was released!

 

Where exactly (which songs) did Oasis rip off The Beatles?

 

Well in fact no, because festival of the 60s and 70s were about "ROCK" and not the commercial pop that was filling the charts.
10cc, The Beach Boys, Chas & Dave and Elkie Brooks were the only more "pop" orientated bands to appear.

I never understood that criticism. Yes, they talked about the Beatles but musically there are very few similarities. In general, Oasis are much louder and "heavier" than the Beatles.

Lyrically, I can understand the criticism somewhat. Particularly on the Be Here Now album where they quote some Beatles lyrics. However, that doesn't bother me. I see it as a tribute rather than a rip off.

 

There's crap rock music too! Some on that list.

 

Whether one likes or dislikes some of the acts doesn't change the fact that the festivals of the era had a more serious rock orientation - which was my point.

 

I know, I just hate the whole rock = serious, pop = commercial junk mentality that we often see. There's a lot of commercial rock music that's every bit as shallow as pop music.

 

I liked that seperation of the two universes. It was nice to belong to the other side. Still is. Screw commercial pop.

 

Yeah! Let's have serious and meaningful non commercial rock songs with meaning like Black Night by Deep Purple:

"Black night is not right,
I don't feel so bright..."

"Black night, black night,
I don't need black night,
I can't see dark night."

As seen mimed on Top of the Pops!

There's often not much difference. I do love Deep Purple by the way.

 

I couldn't agree more, they were obviously influenced by The Beatles but to say they ripped them off is a bit much. Noel wasn't above nicking things here and there though but neither were The Beatles who borrowed or nicked things off their musical heroes as well.

 

Not even a fan, but All Around The World owes a lot to Hey Jude if I remember correctly.

 

I love All Around The World. Had it been a sensible length, it was perhaps the most obvious hit on Be Here Now.

 

there are loads of little riffs n references, but they don't really 'sound' like the Beatles at all. From day one Noel has always been upfront about it

Is there a big cd box with all the albums singles b sides on it available?

 

I think there are separate boxes for the first 2 albums. Not sure about the rest.

 

Yes it probably was influenced by Hey Jude but I wouldn't say it rips it off and just like Hey Jude they are both too long imo

 

Just to clarify, right from the start the reissue program was announced as covering the first 3 albums only (although I'm sure that was for fairly sound financial reasons...)

Yes like I said above Noel isn't above nicking things from their idols but so has just about every other recording artists ever including The Beatles so I just don't understand why Oasis always get pinged for it, maybe because Noel freely admits it? I still think they had their own sound and style and brought something new to the table as well.

I kind of think Noel's genius isn't as a great songwriter or guitar player but his ability to make very little talent go a long long way and the ability to 'borrow' so much and disguise it so well as his own.

That may seem like a criticism but really it's a compliment.
