Porgy & Bess - Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong (Verve Originals) CD Recorded 1957. LP released 1958
Left Alone - Mal Waldron (Bethlehem/Verse) CD I found this online artricle on Mal Waldron to be very interesting... Mal Waldron’s Ecstatic Minimalism Give it a go if you're in the mood for a long and detailed read.
Verse (not to be confused with Verve ) announced a comprehensive Bethlehem reissue program a few years ago, but after the first few releases nothing was heard from them anymore...
And now, something completely different from Mal Waldron....... Embryo: Steig Aus Mal Waldron: Electric Piano Organ, Mellotron: Jimi Jackson Edgar Hoffman: Violin Roman Bunka: Guitar, Saz Dave King/Jorg Evers: Bass Christian Burchard: Drums, Marimba, Vibraphone Recorded in Germany 1973 for the Brain label. I've abandoned any attempt at getting work done with this slab of Psych/Spiritual/Groove/Fusion/Jazz engaging all available grey matter:
I love all three of their releases, two on SACD surprisingly. I wish they'd have continued with this project.
Third Dimension - Roland Kirk (Bethlehem) CD with Roland Kirk (saxophones), James Madison (piano), Carl Pruitt (bass), Henry Duncan (drums) Recorded 1956 This 2017 CD was digitally remastered (uncredited) and issued/licensed by Factory Of Sounds (FOS 2205026) - A BMG Company. There are no bonus tracks and the playing time is approx. 30 minutes. I love hearing all the other musical genres and influences that shine through on this album. The album was originally issued as Triple Threat (King) LP 539
I have a question about the Blue Note/Universal "5 Original Albums" series of box sets, are these the RVG remastered versions or a new (or older) mastering. They look good value and as I was considering buying a couple, I though I would check out your views. Anyone?
I love this (limited) Blue Note series and despite doubling up on a few titles I ended up buying - Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon & Kenny Burrell. All discs in these boxes sound great and at a guess are all probably original CD masters. There are no mastering credits on any of the boxes/sleeves. You get a nifty wee cardboard box and original replica cardboard mini sleeves for each album title. There are no bonus tracks, no booklets, no cloned CDs, and no nasty CD-Rs in this package. It's all absolutely great sounding music - and at a very reasonable price too! This series is issued in the EU by thejazzlabels.com I hope they have more issues planned for future release.
I have loved this LP since it was released and have the European CD, and so when I saw that Vocalion was reissuing this on SACD I had to get it. Sounds great.
Blue Mitchell - Step Lightly Session (A) disc 1 of The Complete Blue Note Blue Mitchell Sessions (1963-67) Blue Mitchell, trumpet; Joe Henderson, tenor sax; Leo Wright, alto sax; Herbie Hancock, piano; Gene Taylor, bass; Roy Brooks, drums.
Charles Lloyd Of Course, Of Course One of those days where nothing but this album could make me feel better
Hey guys I just got The complete bill Evans on verve 18 cd set (2nd edition) and it did not come with any booklet or information at all besides what's on the CDs jackets is that right? Also would anybody know the source of these I understand they're the same that came from the metal box.
Went from listening to the three yo! Miles sets, repeatedly, to the moon dropping its clothes in the street. The connective thread, I realize, is that I love the sound of that electric fretless bass, which these all have in abundance... an aside which doesn't have as much to do with jazz: mick karn's playing has been a favorite of mine for decades. I guess I like what I like-and I have been liking these four albums a lot this past week...
The 2nd (red cardboard box) edition did include a 24 page colour booklet with all relevant recording details. I found this booklet an essential addition to the box due to the manner in which the individual CDs have been cheaply designed with exactly the same sleeve except they are all individually numbered 1 - 18 and have different track listings on back sleeve. If you look at the bottom left hand corner of the back sleeves it states in small print see booklet for details. I gotta say it is not very attractive packaging although it is better than the very clunky/fat boy budget (second edition) box sets of The Complete Bud Powell and The Complete Charlie Parker on Verve. According to the booklet this box set has the exact same mastering as the discs in the original metal box. Now playing disc 1 from this box. It includes two full albums.... Tracks 1-6 Empathy - Shelly Manne / Bill Evans with Monty Budwig Tracks 7 - 12 The Gary McFarland Orchestra | Special Guest Soloist Bill Evans
