Just stumbled on this clip in YouTube, and had to come up with an excuse to post it...

Gang of Four's 1979 song "No Great Men" (original on YouTube)...

...here, as covered by a traditional Javanese gamelan ensemble (song starts about 45-seconds in):

Does Blue Swede's cover of BJ Thomas'
    "Hooked On A Feeling" count?

I think their quirky arrangement and additional touches just made it hookier.

The song comes on during the closing credits of the film...took me a few seconds to recognize the song, but once I caught it...wow

I thought the subject line meant album covers.

Another "your favourite covers" thread? Yes, I do not get the exceptional creativity of this cover. This one is sure better imho, still not sure if it is that creative. MAr Ribot While My Guitar Gently Weeps

I don't know about timing, but after Linda McCartney died, Chrissie Hynde did a slow, mournful version at her tribute that was very poignant given the circumstances. Being familiar only with Sinatra's swing of this, her rendition made my eyes fill up.

  13. I don't know if you can beat this steel drum interpretation of Joy Division's "Transmission" by Steel Harmony, performed during a parade in Manchester...

    Dig those backing vocals!

The album in question also includes a splendid cover, sung by Richard Thompson, of the Japanese 1970s classic Hai sai Oji san.

Joe Cocker did a few covers, but my favorite is With A Little Help From My Friends. Really different from the original.

Not sure it's too outrageous, but Marshall Crenshaw doing Prince's Take Me With U is quite different. Good too!

When I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of the Kate Bush version of Rocket Man and then the Aztec Camera version of Jump.

The first two that sprang to mind were a colliery brass band that covered A Guy Called Gerald's acid house classic 'Voodoo Ray' (swings like crazy), and power pop band The Shazam choosing to cover 'Revolution 9' as a pop song, an amazingly reckless and creative idea:
