Great post Matt, thanks! How ironic that the very first prize on the show was a fur!

Yeah I thought that was quite ironic, too. From what I understand, Bob eventually pushed for them to ban furs from the show. Good move on his part.

The first contestant, Connie, was just as annoying as a lot of the modern day ones though! Her shreek was annoying, and who doesn't trust Bob?

Reading his biography on wiki. he's been sued by a number of female employees over the years.

Bob seems quite pleased with himself he got caught. I'm sure the opening sequence could have been quickly redone if it was something he really objected to.

The great Johnny Olson was the "come on down!" announcer.

No doubt that Johnny Olsen was the man, but Rod Roddy did a pretty good job and I remember him more than any other on that show.

His exclamation "A new CAR!!" is legendary.
I've heard it sampled on some of the coolest UK records. How they found it is anybody's guess.
Was the show on in the UK?

I think new cars should have that sample built in and automatically play the first time you drive it.

He didn't get 'caught', it was obviously just a bit. His wife was long dead and he was a swinging older bachelor by that time. Things did get ugly though as do many office romances.

The video of the first show was great to see. It is funny to me - and a little amazing - that after 40 or so years many things have changed, yet has stayed the same. The first game played, with the piggy bank and where the numbers go (can't think of the name), was just played when Bob was on celebrating his 90th. The music is still the same, too. Great video!

Similar thing happened on Card Sharks. Jim Perry was using a Sony ECM-51 omni mic at the beginning of the episode. At 5:08, you can see him yank at the cable, and the mic poops out. He leans over and uses a contestant's mic at that point. When they come back from commercial break at 5:30, he's back on the ECM-51. At 6:07, there's a nasty hum and apparently an edit, because next time Jim is shown at 6:28, he's suddenly using yet another microphone (a Shure SM61, I think).

At the supermarket this week I noticed one of the tabloids had recent pictures of a very distressed looking Bob at his wife's grave. Even by tabloid standards that's very low; few things are more personal or private than grieving at a loved one's resting place.

There was a Price is Right best of DVD several years back containing 26 episodes. It's wonderful. https://www.amazon.com/Best-Price-Right-Bob-Barker/dp/B00125JPN0

But very carefully selected to NOT include:

    (1) Fur coats as prizes (so therefore the first episode went MIA)
    (2) Dian Parkinson (or whatever her name was)
    (3) Rod Roddy

This resulted in a whole bunch of shows from the 1970s and then BAM! All of a sudden it jumps to the last week of shows and now Bob Barker is an old man. Kind of jarring.

One of the episodes on the DVD actually has Dian (it's the 1st permanent hour-long episode with the "Captain Klutz" showcase.)

Rod Roddy can be ruled out, because his voice was heard on clips from old TPIR episodes in recent years, whenever CBS does clip shows.

What was Bob's beef with Rod Roddy? I prefer Johnny Olson but he obviously died and Rod did a nice job following a legend.
