And your favorite song has to be Wave to the Wind. I like Space and Victim, actually, so I don't know why I responded like that...
I didn't really get the meme either, although I kind of assumed it was Mayer-inspired, on account of him being new, or whatever. But in the photo he's pointing in Chimenti's direction, provided the photo is from a Dead & Co. show.
In the context of the times... by 78, the GD was beginning to appear a little dated. Despite the new wavey appearances of the artists, the 1st Costello, Talking Heads and Graham Parker discs were just plain terrific. Springsteen and Petty maintained their status as breakouts. Even hard arena rock seemed to gain cred with Cheap Trick and Van Halen. The new Dead disc, despite the anticipated link with Feat, came up with the fairly blah sounding Shakedown Street. Back then there was a palpable sense of moving on with some Heads. K&D really came off distant and for once a bit out of place. Stuff like this could have lent a somewaht misguided disillusionment for the post 77-pre Brent era. Like it or not the band needed a change. Late 79 through the 15th anniversary was the proof in that pudding. Imho.
I don't know what it was, just thought it was silly as well. I don't actually make any of these, I just post them if they make me laugh. Like this one, maybe a Phisherman can explain it:
This is my favorite meme ever, and if it were the only meme, I feel the world would be better for it.
I've loved this one for a long time. It's still just as hilarious as it was the last time it was posted here.
These memes are cra Fare Thee Well is where Trey was acknowledged as a Jedi. Trey isn't Jerry, but he's the Jerry of his era. King of Jam Band Lead Guitar. There is another... I had this thought the other day--remember Menasha Mathieson? She and Jerry had a son, I believe. What if she's woodshedding the kid to become the next Jerry? Now, you may see me pose such questions and think, "Dude, you need a full-time job." But I have one. I have one.
I read an interview with Annabelle Garcia several years ago where she said she had never played music, but at an advanced age (I think maybe she was in her late 20s or 30s during this interview) she picked up a banjo and taught herself to play it in a matter of weeks. The Jerry is strong in this one.
I didn't know that about Anabelle, (I think her mother was a musician too,) but what I meant was Jerry's child with Manasha was a girl, Keelin:
In fairness, Aaron Magner of Disco Biscuits plays keyboards in Billy And The Kids, and I thought he was good when I saw Bill's group at Peachfest 2015. I'd replace "Disco biscuts" above with "The String Cheese Incident."
My impression was that "Dead freaks" was the more common term in the '60s, and it gradually shifted to "Deadheads" in the early '70s. Could be a cultural shift in the language, or indicative of the Dead's growing popularity. In the '60s, identifying as a "freak" in that positive sense meant you were part of a countercultural in-group - it was kind of a tribal reference. As a member of the Dead audience, you were part of a hippie tribe, the tuned-in & turned-on, not part of the mainstream. Not that that meaning ever went away entirely, but I think it was replaced by the more general "heads" as the Dead's audience expanded to include a lot of people who were not, well, freaks. I prefer the term "Dead freaks" - it's bolder, more specific. "Deadheads" is generic to the point where anyone can argue what a true deadhead is, but only the truly committed are "Dead freaks!"
Perhaps the most raw & rockin' show they did was 6/25/78: www.archive.org/details/gd78-06-25.sbd.cotsman.7048.sbefail.shnf 6/4/78 (with the famous motorcycle Space>NFA) is the more popular show from that month, and 6/25 tends to be overlooked since it has an almost-identical set-II setlist, but it's even more fiery and revved-up. Things get especially hairy after drums with a menacing feedback Space into a stomping NFA.
Manasha and Jerry had a daughter named Keelin. Not that she couldn't potentially shred. Also, the Grateful Dead pre-date and transcend the term "jam band", which is something that should be reserved for moe (lower case, add stupid punctuation), the Disco Biscuits, and the String Cheese Incident. All playing in purgatory now or any time throughout eternity. Hey, can you tell I'm grumpy today?
