I was always a few years behind. In 1985-6 (my sophomore year of High School) it was The Cars on Records and Tapes.

That was the year I got into prog rock. I was pretty much obsessed with Rush, my favorite albums being 2112 and A Farewell to Kings. I also started listening to classic metal then, and became a big fan of Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, and Metallica in particular. My favorite metal albums included Heaven & Hell, Piece of Mind, and Ride the Lightning.

The sad truth is I did not own any music in my sophomore year of high school. I used to listen to my sisters records. I obtained my first LP, Jethro Tull's Aqualung sometime during the summer between my sophomore and junior year.

For me that would be 1973-74. So it was vinyl and bands/artists like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, New York Dolls, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple.

Whatever the top Classic Rock lps were from 9/71-6/72. Beatles and ex. Zep, Sabbath, Wishbone Ash, Humble Pie. You get the picture. I started to get a little more adventurous as time went on.

A golden year for me. Live shows at the Fillmore East and elsewhere included Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Mountain, Ten Years After, Small Faces, J. Geils Band, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Vanilla Fudge, and others. At home, vinyl, of course.

September of my sophomore year is when I bought Dark Side Of The Moon on LP. I was also listening a lot to Alan Parsons Project Eye In The Sky, Don Henley's I Can't Stand Still, John (Cougar) Mellencamp's American Fool (had it on cassette and LP then), Fleetwood Mac's Mirage, Paul McCartney's Tug Of War. Also when I bought Steve Miller's Greatest Hits 1974-78. I also got Sgt. Pepper on LP for my birthday in October.

Of course, throughout the winter and spring of 1983, I bought many more great records as they were released.

1996 for me--so that was the death throes of grunge and alt-rock.

Soundgarden - Down On The Upside
Alice In Chains - s/t and Unplugged
    Mad Season - Above
Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire
    Tool - Aenima

Also when I was majorly getting big into Beatles for the first time, and Bowie, and Pink Floyd. So all of their (60's, 70's only) CD's as well.
