Not really bluegrass, more old time Appalachian with a some non-traditional instruments on a few tracks like shruti box, bouzouki and percussion. Most tracks are just guitar and fiddle or banjo. This is on Thrill Jockey. Not exactly the type of music I think of as on Thrill Jockey.

That's not half bad, so much trad-influenced music is terrible but I like the track you posted.

Cool guitar playing, not really trad but an authentic feel to the whole...pretty good

In light of Hef's passing, I thought I'd share this clip of Wheatstraw Suite-era Dillards (super-awkward interview at 2:18!).

I hate to be so opinionated about things we all appreciate, but as good as the BG Album Band was, and they were really good--particularly JD and whichever fiddler it was at the time--pound for pound I can't think of a single song I like as much as the original, and they always seemed to make them a little slicker and a little less visceral. Good albums, but not essential ones. I only mention it, not to be a downer, but because to a certain generation those albums are like the bluegrass ur-texts...and I am not saying anyone who feels that way is wrong, but I don't...

I got that album in fact, I am eager to check it out it seems like it has a kind of droneyness that won't be taken amiss.

That's a picture of Jd and the new south not bgab. I do agree that bgab is more slick and produced as compared to the stuff from the 70's but so was tony at that time and so were the 80's.

We really are being super picky, it all still really good stuff and more alike than different.

Oh yeah, there's Skaggs....some of the same characters, but my mistake. Thanks for including yourself so I don't feel bad about being fussy about my 'grass, I can live with it but you're of course right about that too.

To be fair, the new south records after tony left the band are very tough to listen to. I'll put on any bgab album before "you can share my blanket" or "blackjack".

That's a killer record . I have a different version of the same show and it's just awesome. I think I'll spin that next.

I'd agree with that. With Tony they're one of my favorites but without they fall way, way down the list.

Great recordings. Pity about the breaks between songs. Horrible quality control and customer service.

Thanks for bringing that wonderful album to my attention. I will say, this has nothing to do with bluegrass really at this point, but elements of it are to my mind congruent with something like this:

Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun (2006) [Full Album]
