I am totally addicted to these films. Especially the NYC settings that show the streets and buildings. My biggest Ines are Taxi Driver, Across 110th St, The Seven-Ups, and my favorite French Connection. Others I have are Joe, Mean Streets, Fort Apache The Bronx, Midnight Cowboy, and Death Wish.
So my question is what am I missing? Ideas do not have to be action or crime dramas, and don't have to be NYC specifically. Im sure there's some good ones from Chicago or the west coast. Yes I have all of the Dirty Harry already. And Bullit. They'll don't have to be great movies either. Preferebly they are fairly easy to find on DVD. The more urban decay the better.

A few off the top of my head:

    Marathon Man
    Serpico
    Dog Day Afternoon
    (maybe?)

I enjoy noticing businesses/brands that are either prominant or in the background of a film, and then looking them up to find out if they still exist; and whether or not they're still in their original location.

I saw Marathon Man a few years ago and noticed a deli that was just finally going out of business today.

Although it came out in 1981, "Prince Of The City" is very much what you're after.

Never have seen Marathon Man I will check into it. Yes Serpico is on my watch list. I saw it a long time ago, but don't remember it much. I have Dog Day and it's great, but doesn't really count. Not enough Street and old building scenes.
Taxi Driver and French Connection are filled with business signs. Wonder what Sal and Angie's is now?

"Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia"! Doesn't get much grittier than this! Not NYC but still worth your time.

Here's one I like. a lot. It's a little different than the other ones here and might not be to everyone's taste. But it definitely has a lot of gritty street scenes.

These are more early 80s - but still seedy and grimey...

Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 is pretty gritty. Good stuff.

Cruisin' (same director as French Connetion, which you liked).
And I second the suggestion of Assault On Precinct 13. Just make sure you're getting the John Carpenter original and don't end up with the recent remake on accident.

Ooh, yeah, Cruisin'. It doesn't get much NYC 70's grittier than that. Controversial, but right up this OP's alley for the film's look.

The Hollywood Theater in my hometown of Portland, Oregon has a Grindhouse Film Series which shows 35 mm prints of films like these. It's there I saw 1980's The Night of the Juggler, which features James Brolin as an ex-cop searching for his daughter after she's kidnapped by what IMDB refers to as a "twisted psycho." The film's not available on an officially-issued DVD, but it certainly revels in the dirt and decay of late '70s New York.
