Albums you are truly obsessed with!

These albums are directly related to the number of times I've bought a given title. I have 5 versions of Bowie, for instance. I have three copies of most Television albums. I have three copies of the Talking Heads albums. I have three copies of a heck of a lot of Dylan. I have at least three versions of Tull's output.. and Yes.

Just once I'd like to be the one that says: "Oh, a new release huh? Nah, I'll just put it in and enjoy what I have". But I guess that's not the mature of obsessions..........

 

I remember playing Paul Weller's Helioscentric 30-35 times the weekend it came out. That sounds pretty obsessive to me

Last few years the only band that really gets me in obsession-mode is Motorpsycho. Behind the Sun and the latest one, The Tower, have been played and pored over to the max.

I have thought about this thread a little differently. There have been some albums that I was indeed, obsessed with. That is, they were put on play, and played, and played, and played at the exclusion of everything else. In fact, played so much that I burned out on them, and can't stand to hear them now.

Two that come to mind are Tracy Chapman's debut, and The Cranberries "Everyone Else is Doing It".

No way I can hear them now. But for a moment they burned bright!

 

Just for having the guts to admit to loving these three albums, makes me feel that I have a friend out there, whom I haven't properly met yet?

Procol Harum's 1st. (No Beatles? Heresy!).

 

Here's some of mine that I really obsess about, and my comments:

1. Goats' Head Soup: The Rolling Stones - I think this is one of the most underrated Stones albums, and only because it followed EOMS. I try and listen to it once a week.

2. Keith Jarrett: The Koln Concert - I love this. It's like a never-ending journey.

3. Johnny Cash: Unchained - great vocals, and great backing from Tom Petty RIP, produced by Rick Rubin

4. Ray Charles: Genius + Soul = Jazz. It's the combination of Basie side men, Quincy Jones production, and also released, at the time, on Impulse.

5. Kris Kristofferson: Silver Tongued Devil - great album, and features Breakdown (A Long Way from Home) which is a wonderful KK song.

6. Bob Dylan: Street Legal. I still look for the leads to Slow Train Coming, and the gospel material, and I also listen to this at least 3 times a month.

7. Willie Nelson: Stardust - The granddaddy of the American songbook tribute albums, and still great.

8. Miles Davis: Jack Johnson - Jazz into rock does work, and Mclaughlin is brilliant on this.

9. Jerry Lee Lewis; Southern Roots. How he made this, when he was absolutely stoned, is beyond my comprehension. It rocks, and I still wonder about the soul covers, and why he did them. It's a fantastic anomaly in the Killer's career.

10. Santana: Lotus. I have this on Sony double CD, I also have the Hoffman Audio Fidelity cd, and now have the 3 cd full version. Unlike the Fillmore 1968. or even the Buddy Miles joint collaboration, or still the bonus second disc on Santana III, this is out of the world, and totally different to what went before, and what was to come. I listen to it, and it's like an ongoing challenge and puzzle.

The Beatles' Revolver.
First heard it when I was 11 or 12 I'm 33 now, I don't play it as often now but when I do it still blows my mind.
I'm currently obsessed with Beach Boys' Wild Honey. Listened to it every morning for the last month or so.

The title cut of this album by B.J. is easily one of my all-time favorite Burt Bacharach & Hal David songs. I always felt that if you ever wanted to become a songwriter, Burt & Hal's unbelievable run of great songs, should be "Class 101", in learning. "Everybody's Out Of Town", in particular, has Burt writing and arranging one his most "unusual" charts ever, while Hal had to come up with lyrics that work. I sometimes can't believe just how great Hal's lyrics ended up, considering the crazy chord changes and arrangements that Burt would throw at him, but they really were one of the greatest writing teams ever. The following is proof ...

Rushup Edge never gets old, one of the best ever. I prefer earlier Autechre up through about Chiastic Slide. Of course, these are albums that stick out like a sore thumb on this forum...lol

I've played Syro probably more times than any other album in my life.
