Bowie Lead Guitarists: Who's Your Fave?

NB: The great Carlos Alomar is not included in the poll as he was essentially his crack rhythm guitarist/band leader.

I voted for Bowie. His playing on Diamond Dogs is primitive yet totally effective.

Mick Ronson is the correct answer (for me)

Ronno, eternally. Key to Bowie’s world-breaking early sound.

Fripp after Ronno, though he didn’t play on a ton of Bowie’s music, it was always memorable.

Ronson, but big thumbs up to Fripp as well.

  12. I think Ronson was a better foil for Ian Hunter

I love the playing on "Dismond Dogs" so much that I have to vote for Bowie himself.

I want to say Fripp or Belew as they are two of my favorite guitarists but for Bowie I have to go with Ronson.

  19. Mick Ronson... such an incredible list of players I adore (Belew, Fripp, Vaughn, Slick, Alomar...), but, without a moment's hesitation... It's Mick!... All Mick!!... Mick Ronson!!!...

    Regarding the landslide results here?
    As it should be... and...
by a nearly 6 to 1 margin over the silver medalist here (#1- Ronson 57% & #2-Fripp 10%- as I am now typing)

Love that you highlighted Mick's next stop after Bowie- his criminally overlooked work, with the equally brilliant Ian Hunter, but...

I wouldn't say he was a better foil... but....

I love the best Ian Hunter/Mott like I love the best Bowie... and...

...while I prefer Ronson's studio album run with Bowie over his run with Hunter...

...live, I prefer The Hunter-Ronson Band to Mott The Hoople- everything the great Spirit of Mott (that I adored) epitomized, was even more deeply realized, with Mick Ronson...

AND (and this is a big "AND" here, yes) I would been fine saying that, as live shows go, The Hunter-Ronson Band, at their peak, were the equal of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars, but not superior...

...nor Ronson superior specifically as a foil, to Hunter over Bowie... incredible that he worked with them both & ever so brilliantly so, with both of them too...

Nice question, but it's Mick in a runaway. Santa Monica 72 seals the deal for me.

I've always wished he'd worked with Bill Nelson.

  23. Indeed, but Bowie is only as good as his foils.

I mean, Ronson obviously, but I voted for Earl Slick because I love his playing so much
