Probably the most disappointing thing I've read today:

That is incredibly disappointing. I've no need for that release then. Guess the CD version will do.

In a good way? Or a typical JL over-polished, by the numbers, "perfect" performance way? Other than location - not really distinguishable from the Hyde Park performance...or is it just me?

Caiger's been telling us about "great things on the horizon" for over ten years now. I think he's no more than a rabid fanboy.

  8. Rob's heart is definitely in the right place, and he's been responsible for putting together some fantastic ideas (that would please hardcore fans of both ELO and The Move). However, as is the case with most bands, these good intentions are then reduced down to either the bare minimum or scrapped altogether by those higher up the proverbial food chain. I can't say any more, but there was a recent project that could have sounded far much better if only Jeff hadn't chosen to override the decisions made by an industry expert with years of experience and the reputation to match.

If you want a similar example, just look at the proposals made by Queen's archivist, Greg Brooks, compared with the projects that see the light of day. In this particular case, it's believed that QPL's manager, Jim Beach, is the one who blocks the most interesting material from being released, even though one of Freddie Mercury's dying wishes was that his music should never become boring. Instead of keeping older fans happy by throwing open the vaults, which are known to contain a wealth of treasures, they're thrown the occasional bone while Brian May continues to insist that very little of value remains in the archives.

Unfortunately, the biggest difference between Queen and ELO is in what circulates. There are countless sites dedicated to documenting Queen's concerts and recording sessions, plus it's not difficult to find enough content to assemble your own "Anthology" style package. By contrast, I can think of three ELO pages where such research is available, two of these now inactive, and few live shows have ever been bootlegged. As for studio outtakes, only a handful appear to have surfaced, with many from the earlier years. However, as I've discussed in another thread, the gap between these two groups is quickly closing.

Similar to the so-called Fanthology that has been created so elite Queen collectors are able to compile their rarities into a single digital resource, it's recently come to my attention that a group was established to preserve two sets of ELO acetates, with this collective calling itself the Secret Messages Society. Rob Caiger may be little more than a rabid fanboy, to borrow your description of him, but if Jeff doesn't loosen his grip soon, the floodgates could be opened as a result of fans getting impatient with the relative lack of satisfactory official archival projects. All concerned need to be aware their time for being able to sit on what hardcore fans truly want is running out...

Seriously? No 5.1? Why? Was Hyde Park 5.1?

It's a shame Jeff Lynne doesn't take his pal Thomas Walsh's idea of releasing his demo catalogue. The Pugwash archive is awash with the good, the bad and the ugly. Thomas seems quite happy to let the fans decide for themselves.

Pretty much everything he says will happen never does. I would just ignore whatever post's he put's up as they won't happen.

So if Jeff doesn't get this released then the fans will release it?

Jeff Lynne in his older years seems to be deliberately doing everything against his fans wishes. Not willing to tour, poor archival projects (or none at all) releasing mediocre albums after taking more than nearly 15 years to do, no wanting to mend fences with his old ELO band mates. allowing poor sound quality on remasters, etc., etc.

    Why?

Yeah, Jeff thought, "My fans want a great album by me. You know what? I'm giving them a mediocre one!"

Why not? He's not suffering for food or shelter, and sadly, most likely feels little urging to create product for an ever-shrinking fan base...something of a self-fulfilling prophecy, a cyclical process that I believe is aided and abetted by yes-men management...my two cents...

both! judgning from this, I really like the camera work. Hyde Park was not a great edit.
Of course, the sound is the classic Jeff Lynne sound. It is what it is. Wish it was less polished and more raw, but there you go...

Strange, as I think the Zoom live DVD sounds really good...

Odd. I've just seen him live 5 times in 3 years. I'm sure I recall him doing a fairly extensive tour last year.

Also. The bloke is 70 this year....he could have been stiff for yonks now. You should be grateful he's capable of anything other than ****ting himself and dribbling in his dinner quite honestly.

apart from the reference on the cover of the Hyde Park release...does anyone know why both Hyde Park and now Wembley are in stereo only?

with all the strings and bells and whistles, a proper surround track would be terrific!

It's pretty pathetic not to get a 5.1 mix in 2017 for a NEW live concert.

  21. That appears to be the plan, but I'd hate to draw unwanted attention to this preservation group's efforts - particularly as they're meant to be anonymous (yet I think at least two, if not three of its members are easily identifiable), not to mention a certain ELO archivist has been spotted here in the past. From what I've been told, any attempts to release digital transfers of such rarities as the very different 2LP acetates for Secret Messages or Time will immediately stop if Jeff's camp provide official alternatives, though we all know how long fans have been waiting for these. After the recent talk of something worthwhile being on the horizon, it wouldn't surprise me if this team is waiting to see if Jeff finally plays his hand before potentially making their own move. Either way, you can expect to hear an authentic upgrade to ELO's "holy grail" of studio material soon... For all his promises, those who once trusted Rob Caiger to keep a regular flow of new content trickling out of the vaults have ultimately grown tired of him delivering very little of substance in recent years. Sure, the fault may rest with Jeff or even his manager, though I'm sure they'll all soon be aware of how the more dedicated fans could be treated beyond us getting the occasional live package and mostly unimpressive* new studio projects!

*For the record, I previously listed When I Was A Boy from Alone In The Universe as one of my favourite ELO tracks, but in general it's Jeff's classic-era catalogue that I return to far more than his post-1986 output, so please don't think I'm just automatically dismissing everything he's done without good reason. The truth is that I just feel he's long become set in his ways as a producer, and some of the writing on that last album especially deserved more ambitious sounds beyond rarely straying from the approach we've heard almost exclusively by him for nearly thirty years.

Extensive tour?? What, 5 shows in 15 years?

Paul McCartney is 75 and Bob Seger is 72 and both of them put on a hell of a show while both are older than Jeff Lynne. So your point is?

More like, "they'll take whatever I dish out, after all I'm Jeff Lynne" attitude.

I'm a big ELO fan but that last album (Alone In The Universe by Jeff Lynne's ELO) should have been titled Yawn On.

I KNOW he's capable of much better.

Sorry to inform you that ELO most likely sold more records in America than anywhere else.
