On "SCTV", they did a "Towering Inferno" parody in which Joe Flaherty's Charlton Heston starred as the fire chief instead of Steve McQueen. This may've been out of respect to McQueen - who had died only a couple years before - or it might've been because Heston was an easier actor to mimic.

Maybe you saw the "SCTV" version and that's why you got confused! :D

BTW, with a disaster movie, you could argue the notion of "ending" depends on the character involved. Sure, every movie has an ultimate conclusion - it's not a spoiler to say that in "Inferno", they eventually douse the fire and save many people - but there are "endings" for various characters along the way, so it's not like all fates remain undecided until the finale...

IIRC, there was a pre release poster with the same photo. It said something like "There is something wrong with the child in this house. An expert has been called in." And below the picture It just said 'The Exorcist Directed by William Friendkin'
My blood ran cold when I saw that, like when I looked close at the Silence of the Lambs poster and saw the moth.

Yes, The Poseidon Adventure is another good example of that.

    Interesting the various poster designs:

    Simple general traumatic concept:

That one loses points because it makes Sean Young look like Marty Feldman! :D

This one is really eye catching. My personal favorite. Both are the re-release (1970, I think?) version of "The Ultimate Trip" variant from 1968 with the kaleidoscope effect. That one is probably the more well known, because it is the original after all. :)

    I'm partial to these.

If I didn't have a framed Chinatown on my wall, I'd agree with you. It's a great poster, employs the same smoke motif Chinatown did.

I always thought the original ALIEN poster was unique, since it was somewhat abstract but faithful to the movie, and completely mysterious to someone who hadn't yet seen it.
