Not sure the goal of this thread but having listened through it, it's pretty clear what makes a hit... and what doesn't. The stuff that weren't hits are pretty nondescript, lacking in melody (hits usually have catchy choruses and verses), low fi production, or just faceless groups. These songs catch the zeitgeist of 1986 pretty well, but didn't go anywhere on the hot 100 for a variety of reasons. One is probably that so many acts that did this stuff better. Still, maybe worth a listen. Benjamin Orr - Too Hot To Stop Book Of Love - I Touch Roses
But one of the requirements pointed out in the OP is that posted songs SHOULD have appeared on the charts. Not sure why such simple things get overlooked and within no time just anything is posted. What made it interesting to me is the fact that songs DO make the charts and are then forgotten. Anyone can post some obscure albeit catchy song that didn't chart.
This excellent track by The Associates, with mesmerizing piano loops and soaring vocals by Billy Mackenzie.
Pretty sure that The Opposition never charted, but this thread has just gotten so silly that......wtf.
Care-Flaming Sword, 1983 UK #48 Ian Broudie (Lightning Seeds) later re-recorded it for the b-side to Sweet Dreams
