The motor is already floating, and doesn't need the screws for operation.

  3. What does this mean? How would the screws make it float? Something has to attach it to the plynth.

The motor is suspended on a rubber band: it is not actually attached to the plinth. Check out the link below for a pic of the motor assembly

So what everybody is talking about is the two screws to the left and right of the pulley? And obviously NOT the four screws holding the rubber band type thing. This would, I assume relieve the pressure on those rubber bushings that are squeezed to hell in that photo.

Yep. It decouples the motor from the plinth, reducing vibration /hum (usually).

A friend of mine has a Debut - not the carbon.
Is this problem only with the carbon?
He has had no complaints so far.

It's only a problem, if you're hearing mechanical hum, but yes the motor assemblies are the same

Why are so many people not complaining about this?
Has it only affected some tables?

I learned long ago not to buy something based on the reviews. Years ago I got an Emotiva preamp based on the absolutely glowing review I read in... oh, I forget where... but it was an audio publication, not Amazon. So I bought it, hook line and sinker. And my first thought upon hearing this preamp was WHERE DID MY MUSIC GO? It was noisy, and the phono section was a joke. I opened it up and nothing inside but a couple of IC's. Lesson learned. Don't buy something just because it got a rave review.

I placed washers under the 4 outer screws after the washers under the motor mount screws made no difference. A bit better, but not fixed. Then I removed the mount screws and that did the trick. (That was an original Carbon I grabbed for my son in '15. Tossed on a deer hide mat and he got a nice beginner's table for $225. Had I been looking in '17, I'd have gotten the MMF-2.2, but the Carbon has given him no trouble.)
