The Yardbirds' "Shapes of Things" is often credited as the first psychedelic single.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band's "East-West" is credited as the first extended modal jam on a rock record.

Rest assured that I know my Chris Clark discography well (proud owner of an CC autographed cd !), but I was only replying to AudiophilePhil's post about "big hit-making act"...Yes, Chris did chart but sadly couldn't compare with Rare Earth saleswise.

I know it wasn't actual distortion effects. Guitar amps at that time hadn't that function yet.
In a way that 'new sound' came up accidentally and became common many years later.
So recordings like 'Rocket 88' and 'The Train Kept A-Rollin' by the Johnny Burnette Trio are good documents for that.

Plenty of predecessors in the Scopitones archives from Vince Taylor and the Playboys, Les Chaussettes Noires and others.
