Here in Aussie in the Seventies i grew up watching Countdown. It was such a fantastic show each week. AC/DC was on it a lot and all the touring groups made appearances. It was all very relaxed too and very funny at times. It was the first show that started showing ABBA videos as well. ABBA became big in Australia before anywhere else.
Here is an end of decade show.

The Flowers - before they changed their name to Icehouse. First album - brilliant (called "Icehouse")

The first time I ever knew the show existed was when I got a tape with a much worse quality version of this video. The interviewer barely lets Kate get a word in edgewise, but they supplied an amazing dancer for her to perform Babooshka with:

I used to really fancy the girl in this one.

John Buchanan I'm just a headphone kind of fellow. Stax Sigma

The "interviewer" being Ian "Molly" Meldrum, an absolutely legendary figure in Australia.

Presumably for the quantity of cocaine he consumed before each show?

The legend is that the male dancer had never worked with Kate before, and learned the dance from the video, they had one rehearsal and did it.

Fortunately, Countdown sent someone a lot calmer to Kate's home to interview her as well:

He improvised really well if he was expecting Babooshka.

She's a famous photographer and he's an in demand DJ. When they're interviewed nobody ever mentions the band they were in.

Molly had his moments of sheer insanity - but he was very influential in Australia, and on the whole, I like what he did for popular music.

Not very good at interviews though......or other speaking. Best known for " Do yourself a favour".

He was influential on the international scene too and well known with the big names. Most overseas bands went out of their way to appear on Countdown when touring oz. The banter he kept going between Rod Stewart and Elton John over the years was amusing.

Agreed - he sometimes came off as a dork, but it did not seem to hurt his standing with the big names; and next up he was doing his one on one with someone else who was huge. To be honest, sometimes I did not understand it, but he had something.
