Berlin is in a class of its own, so for myself, it doesn't apply in the top 3; a masterpiece unto itself. That being said, Street Hassle, Coney Island Baby, Blue Mask, Songs For Drella and Ecstasy are also excellent Lou albums. I still need to get copies of Magic and Loss, Twilight and The Raven, though.

More a fan of early Lou than later Lou, so my fave 3 are Lou Reed, Berlin & Sally Can't Dance. Songs for Drella and Transformer *just* miss out.

Berlin is a dead-set masterpiece, enough said.

Sally Can't Dance just edges out Transformer for me, because of Kill Your Sons & NY Stars - always loved the vitriol of those two tracks, and the rest of that album is Lou in full 'pop music' mode, silly but fun.

Yeah, the debut has all those Velvets retreads "session-muso"-fied to within an inch of their lives.. but within a context of a songwriter in 1971 trying to relaunch his career without a band, it makes sense.. and it's nice to have a completely different take on those late Velvets leftovers.

It's probably one of those "unpopular opinions", but I find myself coming back to Lou's debut a lot more than much of his back-catalogue.

So many bad things has ben said of the debut album.
I think many people just assume it's bad. They haven't really listened.
It's a great album. It's badly produced, but so are every Velvets album.

I chose Coney Island Baby, Metal Machine Music, and Street Hassle but Transformer, Berlin, The Blue Mask and Songs for Drella are right up there too... and The Bells and Rock n Roll Heart. Why does no one like Rock n Roll Heart? I Believe in Love is a bop, A Sheltered Life is campy fun, and Temporary Thing is one of the best!

Berlin way out front. I never even heard it until the CD reissue in '98, and took to it hard. It's as ingrained in my DNA as some albums I've had twice as long.

Nueva York, because it's so damn good.

Gotta put New Sensations at #3. It's the one that made me a fan. It was a road trip staple in Summer '84, but I was going by Greyhound rather than GPZ. I had a big boombox and I'd just use headphones on the bus.

Well, late one night in Mississippi I made my standard mistake of plugging into the microphone jack instead of the headphone jack, hit play, and blasted the inside of the bus with several LOUD seconds of "High In The City".

    The riders was not pleased.

In fact, those may be the only three that a live as entire albums, although there's music I love on almost all of the albums.

    Had to go...
    1. Set The Twilight Reeling
    2. Transformer
    3. Magic And Loss

More personal meanings though I think. Really hard to not include the live Rock & Roll Heart. I may even be more nostalgic for a collection of '70s highlights I had before I got into the proper individual albums.

I lways thought the track street hassle could have been a coda to the Berlin album.
New Sensations is my guilty pleasure. Some great pop moments and the bass line on the title track is one of the bezt ever.
