I'm sure this will be front page news in France for quite a while.

His '69 lp with the Small Faces, Frampton, Mick Jones gets my vote as one of the best rock lp's of all time.

    Au revoir Johnny

A very sad loss, France's key Rock & Roller, cut a lot of superb records. A luminary and legend.

Massive news for France. Their most legendary star.
Sad news but not a surprise as he had been battling illness of all sorts for years and years. I never liked his music (apart from a few ballads) but he had one of the most powerful voices you'll ever hear.
In interviews he came across as a very humble, nice bloke. My wife was bonkers on him when she was a teenager (she still has her scrapbook).
No mention of his passing on BBC News this morning. Scandaleux!

He was a big deal in France, and as a Francophile, I liked his acting a lot. A very sad loss.

I saw him play the Albert Hall in London a few years back and it remains one of the best concerts in terms of spectacle I have ever seen. His energy was unbelievable. A great character and showman.

NO !! : not a legend, just a bad french "rock'n'roll" singer (hardly known outside France and Belgium ), but a good actor.

    That is very subjective.
Someone who sold more than 60 million records in his country (more than 1 per inhabitant) and gathered 30million people at concerts (over 3000 concerts) surely was a legend in his home country.

Plus he was a great singer with a powerful voice, why would so many great songwriters write him songs if his singing was bad ?

Don't troll here if you have nothing constructive to write !

The sort of operatic power rock that he did well.

Could you explain how a bad singer could have had a 57 year-long recording and performing career?

What I admit, though, is that is musical choices (and mostly his choice of songwriters) in the last 30 years have sometimes been disputable.

Jimmy Page played on this (he's not in the video). You can even hear the "Whole Lotta Love" riff in there if you listen carefully (of course before Led Zep existed).

This was good 80s hit and a great mini-movie video.
