I probably have about a dozen or so Sundazed pressings. I can't remember any problems with them. The Thirteenth Floor Elevators Psychedelic Sounds is probably my favorite.

I would not even call it a bad reputation for what I have also read in other threads too. The fact is that for old albums I would want to go for a good analog version while for most recent ones, where also the master was digital, I would just try to go for the best sounding version.
So , in this case, I would like to assess its source before jumping on it despite the fact that you and others have confirmed that it sounds good and I have no reason to doubt at all.

Exactly. Honestly, the Beefheart "fake" mono LP they put out sounds great - and that's what matters to me.

The funny part: Nobody even suggested it sounded bad until the spectrum graphs were put up.

The dishonesty is what bugs folks, I guess - and that's understandable. They advertised that it was from found mastertapes when it turns out that they did a needledrop/folddown/tape hybrid of sorts. The end result sounds pretty darn good.

If anyone cares, Sundazed has a garage sale going on. I'm into the vinyl so the double LP sets of the Electric Prunes singles and Everly Brothers demos (both $17) were good finds.

It's interesting to me that so much music that is old memories to me, is new music to so many others.

Why does it matter how "good" it sounds when it's not the authentic mono mix? One song is even a fold-down entirely. It's unacceptable!

I wish Sundazed would do the whole Byrds catalog on vinyl. I'd give them another chance, if they are using QRP to press their albums these days.

Sundazed hasn't done a real good sale in a long time from what I can tell - I wonder what happened. I was just looking a receipt from 4 years back when I ordered a bunch of LPs for under $5 each - titles that they still stock! Miss those days!

Surely you mean Bloomfield / Kooper / Stills - had it, sold it.

I compared it to my modest UK Embassy „nice price“ edition from 1973 which had much more room information than the Sundazed NRP pressing, much more present bass, and the drums were less confined to the background. The Sundazed was a tad bright in the trebly guitar parts.

Recently I bought the Speakers Corner - it was an upgrade from the Embassy: fuller sound, less trebly guitar and the band is less in the background. So if you’re looking for a reissue this is the one to have.

I would like to compare the Speakers Corner to an original Columbia two-eye “360 sound” -A1/-A1 though.

I've got a fair bit of Sundazed vinyl including Ranny Sinclair, the Sun Ra, Muddy Waters, We the People, some Byrds, some Spoonful, Trashmen, Dylan's "John Wesley Harding" (which sounded SO much better than my early 70's copy), etc. The only release of theirs I remember being disappointed with was the first Left Banke album. Aside from that, to my inexpensive turntable-trained ears, they've all sounded perfectly fine.

Why does it matter how good it sounds when it's not the authentic mix being advertised?

What don't you understand about that?

Yeah, exactly. This one has been on my list for a while. I saw a Speakers Corner copy in my record store around the corner and picked it up. I've had in general pretty much only good experience with Speakers Corner.
So I now have the Speakers Corner, but was wondering what the Sundazed was like.
I may make the effort and go pick up a A1/A1 original though.
    Has anyone compared the two?

  21. James_S888

I would point out that the Speakers Corner was mastered at Emil Berliner in Berlin by Marten de Boer. So tape copies. Hopefully 1:1 transfer of the master tape.
I think I will make the effort to pick up a A1/A1 original.....

Discogs lists Kevin Gray in the deadwax for the Sundazed reissue, I can't imagine it sounds bad. Mine's arriving today, think it was on sale for $17 when I bought it and the Muddy Waters RSD BF last week directly from Sundazed. I'll post my comments after I listen to it.

That's what I read too on the Discogs site.
My question is did Kevin Gray get the tape or was he sent a 96/24 file? Sundazed is a bit hit and miss here. Mostly hits, but sometimes........

So you would rather have/listen to a fold down than the genuine mono mix?

And when the stereo master is available on CD anyway?

    Makes perfect sense.
