I played my UHQR pepper last night up against my German Apple with A1 in the runout grooves. Well, no contest really. The German Apple pressing had a natural tone and great bass. The UHQR delivered better separation, but the highs and midrange were too forward. As I said earlier, cut too hot. I'm sure this is what Geoff heard in Fremer's room as well. It's lacking in ultimate warmth. So, back up on the shelf goes the UHQR. I must get around to selling it one of these days, but I'm torn as it has become such a collectible. Oh well, I suppose anything is for sale with the right offer, lol.

What has my mind reeling lately is what Mofi did with the Abraxus One Step pressing. Now I don't own it and never heard it, but I trust what others have said in that it is SOOO much better than ANY other copy ever put out there, analog or digital, makes me fantasize what they could do with Pepper, Abbey Road, etc. Just wow!

So, I take it that you’re not buying the QRP pressing of the remix next week?

Ben, do you own the Nimbus pressing?

I wonder how similar the Nimbus and the standalone MFSL pressing sound? Since they were both cut by Jack Hunt, they can’t be too dissimilar.

I guess it depends on where he cut both records. IIRC, the master was used for the Nimbus. Who knows if Hunt got pushback by the respective executives on his mastering choices.

I wonder what we would be saying about the MFSL box today, if Stan Ricker was given free reign to master the albums the way he wanted to.

It’s all speculation. I’d love to hear the Nimbus pressing but I can’t afford the price.

I wasn’t aware that aside from the Abbey Road black triangle, there was another Beatles CD that is said to sound better than the 1987/2009 CDs.

It is the Japan 1st release 1987 CD and it's better than the MFSL Vinyl is all. Abbey Road black triangle is much older from 1983. The AR black triangle and the MFSL Vinyl are nearly sonic twins.

But this is an apples to oranges comparison.

Don't have the Nimbus to offer an opinion, but was aware of it back in the day from reading the imported UK magazine, Hi Fi Today.
It was a limited pressing in a series of pop/rock LPs that they offered to readers.
Standard 2 Box Parlophone labels, inner sleeves, inserts and gatefold covers were used so it was produced very much in co-operation with EMI.

Not sure I buy the reports that the original master tape was used as you'd assume that a copy tape would be provided as standard EMI operating procedure.
However, unlike the MFSL versions and the Australian Audio 5 this one wasn't half speed mastered but did utilize a tube mastering console so it will have a different sound signature.

I'm going from an aging memory, but I think the UHQRs also had the JVC Super Vinyl in the press for a longer period of time for increased detail. I love the sound of mine.

Your memory's good, they had a pressing cycle of around 2.5-3 minutes compared to the usual 12-20 seconds for the average mass produced LP.
The record profile was also different being virtually flat across the playing surface compared to a standard wedge shape pressing in order to eliminate introduced tracking error.

Sure, but IMO, one would be better served with the AAA MFSL, in this case.

I have the Japan CD of Pepper and I don't think it sounds better than the MFSL. The original master tape used and the the AAA mastering give it a leg up in my book. I don't disagree that the MFSL leaves more to be desired. I haven't heard the the black triangle and I am bit surprised that it is close the MFSL Abbey Road.

Check out what Steve has to say about it and from my experience is absolutely correct. The 1987 CD easily bettered it and this is not the case with any other MFSL Beatles Vinyl.

Whose to say which record sounds better it’s all in the mind you know. I listen to the music and don’t try to analyze it. Just enjoy the music pick the one you like and forget the others.

Dave, I know this as I started doing 4 channel recording bouncing tracks down to one track. There certainly was a big improvement when the they to 24 tracks. Still, the cd is a generation down from the MFSL and a digital transfer.

Surely, the 1987 CD of Magical Mystery Tour easily betters the MFSL vinyl.

According to the MFSL Vinyl-drop I have and the 1987 CD, yes. The Abbey Road drop is as was already mentioned and the rest of the MFSL's easily bettered the 87' CD's.

It sure does. Just about any pressing of MMT bests the MoFi. I own both.

I have a copy of the German Hor-zu and it sounds great. Certainly better than any cd.
