The vibraphone instrument in jazz has became a favorite for me to listen to. Im listening to this Ray Brown album right now and enjoying it!

What are some of the great albums featuring the vibraphone?

    What are your favorites?

Any style of jazz suggestions is welcome :)

Gary Burton and Bobby Hutcherson are two names I would investigate. Lionel Hampton if you like jazz from the 30s and 40s.

I think this is Milt's best band. It swings like mad.

Pretty much any Steps Ahead album, but I think the best one is N.Y.C., and this might be the best track.
    Mike Mainieri on the vibes.

Love Bobby Hutcherson on Eric Dolphy's Out to Lunch..... Also the small band Benny Goodman sides from the late '30s and early '40s with Lionel Hampton, spring immediately to mind.

Also, a little more contemporary, Mike Mainieri's An American Diary is a great album.

If you like 70's ECM style jazz there was a good band Double Image with two vibraphone/marimba players (Dave Friesen and Dave Samuels).

When I was young I really struggled with the sound of vibraphone but I began to get into the sound wih Corea/Burton. Thanks to my enthusiasm for John Zorn there are now a bunch of albums featuring Kenny Wollesen that I simply adore. Try The Goddess: Music For The Ancient Of Days.

Andrew Hill's JUDGMENT and Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT! both feature key sideman work by Bobby Hutcherson.

In my collection: vibraphone = Gary Burton

"Like minds" (posted above) is very nice, but you should check how those friendships started:

    With Chick (ECM 72)

With Pat, and others (ECM 77)

He has some other great records with ECM, but those 2 are classics.

I'd consider David Friedman's work with Tim Buckley 1968-69 on the road and in the studio to belong to the Jazz genre. It's certainly the playing I've enjoyed most.

Excuse the very weird sounding video. Horrible mash up version
