Starting on page 4, there is some discussion on the pre-1986 stuff. When I first started the thread, I wasn't sure the level of interest, so I thought it might be good to cover a limited window of time. These years made most sense given the artists and albums that came out.
You have great, great taste. That would almost duplicate my selections. I actually prefer the radio version of Mind Playin Tricks On Me to the album version with different, rawer lyrics.
Earlier this year the 25th anniversary Blu-ray was released and it includes rare footage of a very young Tupac getting interviewed about his role in the film. Juice Blu-ray Review - DoBlu.com
I assume you meant to post their most famous song, Sometimes I Rhyme Slow. The video doesn't seem to play.
This inspired me to make a top 30 playlist from this era. Yes, I know a lot was left off but I was trying to keep it to 30 and didn't want to duplicate artists. The closest I came to duplicating was Ice Cube/Eazy E/Dr. Dre solo + NWA separately. Put this together somehow, streaming or whatever and it's an instant party. I lived this era... and still love this stuff... 1. Rock the Bells - LL Cool J 2. Peter Piper - Run-DMC 3. Paul Revere - Beastie Boys 4. Push It - Salt N' Pepa 5. We Control the Dice - Mantronix 6. Funky Beat - Whodini 7. Paid in Full - Eric B and Rakim (NOT the Coldcut Remix, NO "This is a journey into sound" stuff) 8. Boyz N Tha Hood (original not remix) - Eazy E 9. You Gots To Chill - EPMD 10. Cinderfella Dana Dane - Dana Dane 11. Straight Outta Compton - NWA 12. My Philosophy - Boogie Down Productions 13. Dope Fiend Beat - Too $hort 14. Eye Know - De La Soul 15. I Get The Job Done - Big Daddy Kane 16. I Go To Work - Kool Moe Dee 17. Fight The Power (original soundtrack version, not the album version remix) - Public Enemy 18. My Summer Vacation - Ice Cube 19. Mind Playin Tricks - Geto Boys 20. Ain't No Future In Yo Frontin' - MC Breed 21. Check The Rhime (Mr. Muhammad's Mix) - A Tribe Called Quest 22. **** With Dre Day - Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg 23. What's My Name? - Snoop Dogg 24. Juicy - Notorious BIG 25. Regulate - Warren G 26. Player's Ball - Outkast 27. NY State of Mind - Nas 28. I Got 5 on it - Luniz 29. Liquid Swords - GZA 30. Old School - 2Pac
on a playlist tip, here is one I've had cooking up for a while. really need to spend some more time on this one tbh, but lots of gems there nonetheless the golden age 86-92, a playlist by silkyskillz on Spotify
It's come out in the last few years that Dre didn't produce much on the Above The Law album. It was pretty much done when the group turned it to Ruthless. Dre did som post-production work (mixing, etc) Cold 187 had done several interviews talking about this. He dis one with Sway a year or two ago around the time the Straight Outta Compton movie came out. 187 would also became the main producer for Ruthless when Dre left. When noticable thing about "Livin' Like Hustlers" is that Ice Cube is not on the Ruthless posse cut on the end of the album. This was before it was well known he was going solo. Cube also refused to be in the video for Murder Rap featuring the other members of NWA and The D.O.C.

That's pretty funny! Although extremely rare, there are a couple of officially released clean versions of BBHMM (the song, not the album). There's one where the dirty words are covered up by sound effects, which only appears on the US promo CD. There's also a version that is re-cut by AMG with new lyrics, which is on the aforementioned promo CD and at least one various artist compilation.
This is a well done playlist. I was hooked at the first track ("How Many Emcees")--a favorite of mine that surely will be talked about when 1992 pops up.
Ditto. I usually listen to the radio version with the alternate lyrics. Took me a while to track it down, but I finally found a CD copy of the entire album We Can't Be Stopped in its clean version. Some songs are far more impactful with the explicit lyrics, but others work just as well with the obscenities cleaned up.
thanks man. I've just made this playlist collaborative, so if you, or anyone else for that matter, would like to chip in some tracks, please go ahead! was thinking it might be an idea to set up some playlists to run concurrently with this thread anyway. you know, one for each year, starting with '86 and so on. also thinking a monster 86-95 playlist could well be in order. again, these can be a collaborative thing, so everyone can chip in their favourite tracks etc happy to set these up if folk are interested..
