I don't understand how people can not like Sailor>Saint. I feel like Bobby was channeling Steely Dan and Pete Townshend's solo material with that one, but making it very Bobby and Dead-like. Saint is as close to yacht rock as they ever got. Like us all, the Dead were a victim of the times.
Definitely them. I think in an alternate reality, where Jerry lived to a ripe old age, Saint would have become a vehicle for monster jams. Of course I see the potential for monster jams in any Dead song, even France.
Saint is ok. Lost Sailor is trash. (IMO). And I have a lot of JRAD shows. They played the combo in Denver this year at the Ogden to open the second set.... oof. Did not inspire confidence. Luckily it wasn’t super jammed out and they moved on quickly. Every version of Sailor I’ve heard by anyone is a skip. For me.
DaP 13 2-24-74 thanks to a @US Blues tip. First set really right up my alley. Phil on this China Cat is particularly playing tremendously trickily. For the geetar heads, what is that Jer thingy kicking in about 3:25 Candyman, it seems a little different than a straight wah wah but then I am clueless in these matters; that must have been pretty wild bouncing around the room's heads.
Musically I think both Sailor and Saint are ok, especially Sailor (Saint is a bit too Doobie Brothers for my taste). Weir just played them too much.
So true, but that's why I like it. Disturbingly easy to imagine Michael McDonald singing "still don't know what I'm going for" over that piano line.
Happy new year my fellow heads, and all other fine people. 01.15 local time. Got home from my brothers place half an hour ago. Three course dinner, fireworks and all that fun nonsens. Cigar and sparkling wonders from france. Winding down with Winterland December 31, 1978. I believe the Dead started 00.30 past midnight due to som Bill Graham thing... Anyway, a fine way to close down the old ice rink. Band was road weary and it was '78... so anything goes. But they did a fine job and it's a three set show. A very long night with all the opening acts etc.. I'm sure there were lots of blow to keep the train rollin. (watch out for Jerry on Johnny B Goode) I'm just listening this time but I remember the momemt in Scarlet Begonias from the video when Garcia get that acid grin. Band locks in. Music plays the band. Skål!
I really don’t mind Sailor > Saint, cheesiness aside. Lost Sailor sets a certain mood and Saint of Circumstance can be fun. But like @Crispy Rob said the overplaying of that combo was before my show-going time and I don’t encounter it all that often in my regular listening, so it can feel like something different when I do.
No. Stop whatever you are doing and put this on right away. At least the second set, one of the most fabulous pieces of music in Grateful Dead history! (I'd go full warewolf with my enthusiasm, but I'm too old to go full warewolf ).
Och god fortsättning! Going back to Miami 1974, June 23. The Wolf has been mentioned a lot recently. This show is bloody damn good. Jerry's sense of beautiful melody playing really shines in "to lay me down". It's up there with the beautiful jam for me. The song is slow, but Jerry goes for an agressive solo, he attacks the strings! Just a wonderful show with (also) very good Jerry vocals. And ..to bad about the 73/74 vocal recordings but what can you do eh? Still hot stuff!
