On second thought, if they are a friend, then I might just drop the needle on track 2 of "Led Zeppelin III". Even if they aren't fond of the sound, they may appreciate the lyrical gesture of goodwill. :p

My first thought was Dark Side of the Moon, but that's an album best listened (at least initially) alone so you can kinda take it in.

If I were to play an album for someone it'd be something like Led Zeppelin I or II. Or maybe Abbey Road. Nothing too deep, but immediately enjoyable.

Yes, Abbey Road was high on my list too. And I'm not even an enormous fan of it (although my favorite Beatles song is on it via "Here Cones The Sun"). Yet sonically it's so warm and...immersive.

My FAVORITE Bee Gees album of all time! :uhhuh:

    Agreed! :agree:

The good thing is, with so many albums (both modern and classic) being released on vinyl now, it is much easier these days to introduce people to the world of vinyl. :)

I actually wouldn't try to convince anyone to get into vinyl. Right now it's expensive. 20 years ago was the time to be getting into vinyl. If someone came over to listen to a record, I'd play anything they wanted to hear. I have a lot of records to choose from. If he wanted a recommendation on record that still in print, I say one of the Rhino Van Morrison re-issues. And if he wanted to hear it I'd play it for him. If he wanted me to pick a record, I'd probably play Coltrane. Why? Well, it's Coltrane. I like Coltrane.

With so many genres this is virtually impossible to answer with just one so I have taken the liberty of a few I would assuredly use.
1.Bob Dylan Blonde On Blonde. Not only did this stun us believers in the 60s it also shocked the music world completely.Unbelievably majestic in its presentation.Especially so in its monoraul format.
2.Beatles Abbey Road not one of my top 5 Fav Beatle LPs but it does continue to influence post generations more than any other Beatle LP.
3.Allman Bros Fillmore East but it would have to be a Pink Label only so the listener could experience that powerful on stage presence that only a Pink Label can provide.
4.Any 68-72 Green Warners Van Morrison LPs.
5.Beatles SPLHCB in mono only( UK edition)
6.The Band. The Sun Studio drum sound Levon Helm was so fond of is best presented on this LP.This IS/WAS the sound of the early 70s to a lot of us.Cool stuff.(1969 orig. only)
    7.Love Forever Changes
    8.Mott The Hoople Mott (US)
    9.The Clash London Calling
    10.Lou Reed The Blue Mask
    11.Pink Floyd The Wall
    12.Marianne Faithful Broken English
    13.Pink Floyd PATGOD (UK stereo)
    14.Hendrix Electric Ladyland (US)
    15.Los Lobos Kiko
    16.CCR. Bayou Country
    17.Traffic (1968)
All picks must be experienced on original pressings.

Awesome list. I would substitute the UK “Mott” for the US.

Ah ha...a jokester among us. Fortunately I do not own any albums like that. Maybe that is why lp's might be a turn off for you. One has to take care of your albums.

Loved the Zeppelin II idea. Although I do not own a hot stamped copy, I do have a nice Japanese pressing that sounds tremendous.

  13. I'd play them something they like and know very well. One of the following titles usually fits the bill:
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (30th anniversary LP)
    Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (SH/KG 45 rpm)
Beatles - Sgt Pepper (from mono box)
Steely Dan - Gaucho (original Bob Ludwig cut)
Elton John - Blue Moves (original Rocket LP)
The Police - Ghost In The Machine (original Dutch LP, same cut as UK)
Eva Cassidy - Songbird (SH/KG LP)

I think I'd go with Rotatey Diskers with Unwin by Stanley Unwin (though it is only mono). It not only demonstates how funny the LP can be, compared to the relatively po-faced CD, it explains the nature of the format, demonstrates the echo chamber, and references Tchaikovsky, Presley, et al.

I owned and ran a second hand record store from 1984 to 1990 so there's not much you can tell me about listening to and looking after LP's.
The thing that is even more bemusing than the vinyl revival is the talk about a cassette revival. Cassettes ! Don't even get me started.

whatever he/she wants to listen to

if it is that difficult to pick a vinyl LP that is obviously sonically superior to whatever format he/she is already listening to, then why bother switching in the first place
