Lyrically it may not be slow doom, but musically the second side
of Blue Cheer's New and Improved peels the bark and transcends
beautiful gardens to withering dead flowers. Stephen Holden leads
the charge with slow obliteration and shimmering meltdown leads,
with Peace of Mind and Fruit and Icebergs. Like the sound guy says
at the end of Fruit and Iceberg's gong whack... Good God.

That's Randy Holden on guitar on side B (and Leigh Stephens on Side A) of New! Improved!

Check out Randy's original solo album Population II, which is certainly a contender for a proto doom-metal album (utilizing 16 Sunn cabinets and a drummer to create a sonic maelstrom) where he re-records "Fruit and Iceburgs".

That Randy Holden album has been a constant presence since I was introduced to it a few years ago. Now, if only I had tracked down a relatively reasonably priced copy of my very own.

My mistake on that, I was thinking of the rock and roll writer, Stephen.

I do have the Population II w/ the bonus tracks from Guitar God. It is
so intense and heavy, it actually scares me at times; makes me think
my woofer might bust thru the grill of the cabinet and attack me like
weird shaped guard dog. And that is why they call Randy Holden,
guitar god, painter and prophet, I guess.

I bought the LP reissue about 12 years ago (numbered and signed), but apparently they used the wrong master, and the cd version available on his website is the best sounding, though I've never heard it.

Yeah, I've seen that one. But, man, $32 with shipping for one CD is a lot. I have trouble spending that much, as great as the album is. Seems like money better spent on more music.

True, but it is the only version that Randy gets money for.

Absolutely fair, when I do order it finally it will be through him to get him the money.

I discovered Sea of Bones last week purely by luck on Bandcamp. The Earth Wants Us Dead is a KILLER album of doomy, psych-tinged sludge metal. I ordered this 2CD set directly from their page for $6. The 2nd disc contains the massive, 39 minute title track.... a moody, drone-metal tour de force! Highly recommended!!!

The Palehorse/Palerider Burial Songs debut from last year is a pretty cool mix of heavy doom and shoegaze ... Best New Albums of 2017 *

Earth is amazing. I got to see them play a couple of years ago opening for Boris. They were fantastic. I really dig their live albums, too. My favorites are the albums that came out right after and including Hibernaculum. But all Earth is great, in my opinion.

I like to playmy Earth CDs really loud on my big system when I am alone. There's something about their music that is cathartic. Healthy. Man, I'd love to see them live someday.

I was at that show at the 9:30 club. I had to leave before Boris played, but I was there to see Earth anyway.

Boris always put on a good show. Another band where I almost prefer the live recordings, like Earth. They're worth seeing if you ever have the time.

before the witch, Greg Andersons band Engine Kid started to get into sub sludge territory, mixed with some indie Slint - ish stuff. I saw them on this tour and they did a extended sludge closer. too mid tempo to be really relevant to this thread but Jiffypopinski might be interested. the LP has a wicked gatefold with angels on it

maybe one day somebody will step up and reissue this. 30 for even a used CD is a little steep, and I would be scared of the cassette that old. I could see where this wouldn't have fit in at the time, even in the underground
. the clostest thing at that time I know of was EHG and Buzzoven starting out about 89-90 but they had mostly the punk audience, and really about three times as fast as this.

CHRCH have signed to Neurot. Yeah. Vaguely bummed. Battleground Records were great to deal with but Neurot seem too Big Business to me, kind of a rip-off. New one coming out soon though

CORRUPTED have had Nadie 12" repressed thru Throne Records. Their postage rates look almost reasonable. Plus their website says a new CORRUPTED 12 is coming out in Feb. "Felicific Algorithim"
