Is there even an audience for new rock anymore?

Yes. Are they upset if youth have moved on...past rock...to hip hop...EDM...etc. And are they expecting young people to gravitate toward jazz, country, traditional pop.

Did you ever read any of the articles written about rock & roll when it first broke? It was the source of every evil known to man. You want to know what the recording industry really thinks of rock you look no further than the Grammys.

    Maybe you misunderstand.

Rockers who are old now...currently...in 2017...some of them...want young people to like the Rock of the Sixties and Seventies.

But young people have their own music and their own new genres.

Many have moved on past Rock.

Just like we did in the Sixties and Seventies.

I don't think musicians of the 1940's, 50 years later, were clamoring for kids in the 1990's to play 1940's music...

Thanks for sharing. Yes, I have an opinion. That's why I followed my rhetorical declarative "question"...with the statement: "Having said that.."

And then I added some context.

    "DRM said:
Is the Rock generation of the Sixties and Seventies more interested in the younger generation continuing Rock...compared to previous generations being interested in their type of music being continued 40 and 50 years later by younger people?

Having said that, there's always been a wish to pass on to the younger generation treasures from the past.

    Traditions.

    Cultural ways.

    Family favorites."
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do know that there was some great music made in the Sixties and Seventies, in large part because of the huge numbers of young people. There was, of course, a baby boom following WWII, where everyone was so ready to have children...and lots of them...to settle down, come home from the war, and create life. Following the unbelievable death and destruction...in the millions...from that war.

And because of advances in electronics and sound recording that came in the Sixties and Seventies.

And I also know how some of the Sixties and Seventies rocker enthusiasts jumped on disco and really hated on it. Some burning records, I believe. And not all of the rockers jumped on the New Wave bandwagon. Or the New Age bandwagon of the 80's. Or the production qualities of the synth driven/electronic drums music of the 80's.

    What's worth continuing and celebrating...and revisiting...will continue.

The Beatles are an example of a group that transcended Rock. Even in the White Album, maybe their album that rocked the most, they also featured show tunes, ballads, experimental pieces, shades of psychedelic music, a song that sounded like Tiny Tim could have sung it, etc..

And their earlier work...which featured such great harmonies, melodies, vocals, and instrumentation...will never go out of style...because it's timeless in nature.

Due to the quality of work they did.

I'm not saying Rock is dead. (Although, admittedly, I did say Rock is so..."yesterday".)

    I'm just making a point.

Much of rock has already been assimilated in the new music of today.

If people want to still call it Rock, that's fine.

Although I think the new music of today is worthy of its own genre.

Hip Hop, Rap, Electronic Dance Music, etc.

Whatever Adele does...whatever genre it fits into, it's being done by other female solo/singular artists as well.

This is true, rock and roll was largely reviled and disparaged when it first came out. And could you please elaborate on what you are saying...when you state: "You want to know what the recording industry really thinks of rock you look no further than the Grammys."

No, there is not an audience for new rock. Rock music is pretty much dead. Fortunately, we have decades of older rock music to discover and explore.

In many ways, the “rock generation” of the 60’s and 70’s should be amazed at the resilience of rock among younger generations. I think I might have posted this before, but it’s quite common to see rock artists in their 40’s and 50’s (Green Day, RHCP, Guns N’ Roses, Pearl Jam, and the like) or even older (the Stones, The Who) headlining major festivals alongside younger acts in their 20’s and 30’s (often hip-hop, EDM or R&B, but some rock as well). Among 20-somethings I know that are really into music, there is little resistance to rock, even if it might not be the favorite genre.

That’s an amazing thing. I keep repeating this, but rewind 50 years and take a look at the Woodstock lineup. There were 32 acts that performed, and how many were over 30 years old? Just one - Ravi Shankar. If you were older back then, there was no way young people would have listened to your Elvis or your girl group records, much less 50’s jazz, blues, or certainly pop vocals like Sinatra or Nat King Cole. Rock greats like Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard were viewed as “oldies acts”, fossils. Crazy.

So, take heart. Rock is alive and well, largely, I believe, because young music fans today are much more open to sounds that might be viewed as “old school”.

Rock is not dead. A perusal of YouTube will bare that out. I'm not talking about "vintage or classic" rock. New Artists in every genre from hard to psych. And older artists who still perform. The last KISS concert I attended probably had as many young people in attendance as older. The same as King Crimson at the Beacon this past November. I was surprised at the number of twenty somethings in the audience. Sorry brother, but Rock ain't dead. Or as Danny and The Juniors put it so eloquently "Rock & Roll will never die". Peace

It's fine to not like current music, everyone has their own taste, there is no right or wrong when it comes to that. But when people make these blanket rock is dead statements, they shouldn't be surprised when they get a little push back on that.

I view all of this new rock as derivative and variations of a theme already played out.

    Even if it's selling.

Although, I guess that means there still IS an audience for new rock.

Maybe there's groundbreaking new rock that I just haven't heard. Or heard much of via the mainstream media.

I think this is the first I've ever heard any of Ed's music. Or at least knew it was him I was listening to.

A few minutes ago when I googled him.

    Shades of Michael Jackson...or Drake?

    Justin Timberlake?
