Tough one. Die Hard is such a classic, but I love "Rain Man." Barry Levinson is one smart filmmaker.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being was my favorite movie of the year and maybe the decade.

    Other 1988 favorites:

    Bull Durham
    Dangerous Liaisons
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

1988 is the year Hollywood cinema started to go downhill. There is only one film on the list that I like and that is Die Hard.

Films from 1988 that I like but not on list include:

    Spoorloos (The Vanishing)
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down
    Red Sorghum
    A Short Film About Killing
    A Short Film About Love
    Monsieur Hire

You think that 88 is weak? Can you share a strong 80s years as a point of reference?

The above were nominated/awarded in '88, but were 1987 films.

1982 was a way better year than 1988. "ET', "Blade Runner", "Trek II", "Verdict", "Thing", "Poltergeist", "Sophie's Choice", etc.

Those are the ones off the top of my head - I'm sure I've forgotten some.

1988 had a few classics but was mostly kinda meh...

You forgot "A Fish Called Wanda"
I remember this because I was so sad watching this in MD as a 16 year old because I knew I was going to move in the middle of HS

    eighties ?
    Not my decade for movies.
    Think the nineties were better.

Saying that my pick in the 1980s would be Predator & Die Hard.

My favorite movies of 1988 in order....

    My Neighbor Totoro
    Who Framed Roger Rabbit
    The Naked Gun
    Gorillas in the Mist
    A Handful of Dust
    They Live
    Grave of the Fireflies
    Imagine: John Lennon
    Mississippi Burning
    A Fish Called Wanda
    Heathers
    Talk Radio
    Dangerous Liaisons
    The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
    Die Hard
    Beetlejuice
    Stand and Deliver
    Big
    The Accidental Tourist
    Scrooged
    The Milagro Beanfield War
    The Last Temptation of Christ
Tucker: The Man and His Dream

I still haven't seen from this year The Unbearable Lightness of Being, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Bonoche, etc. 30 years ago I sort of mentally put it on my "I'll watch this someday" list, but I still haven't gotten to it.

1982 was not just the highlight of the decade but is in with a shout for the greatest year ever, especially in terms of Sci-Fi with ET, Blade Runner, Wrath of Khan, Conan the Barbarian, Poltergeist and (my favourite) The Thing. On the recent Arrow Thing reissue there is a special feature about 1982 in film as it is so highly regarded.

Plus Ghandi, Sophie's Choice, Rambo First Blood, Diner, Tootsie, 48 Hrs, Annie....

    "Annie"? "ANNIE"????

"Annie" is a strike against 1982, not a credit for it! :D

Yes 1982 is a great year and I should have prefaced my comment to exclude that year. I would like a reference for other years. 87 had some good stuff but I can't think of a year in the 80s is really on an 82 level.

1988 might not have classics like 82, but it's has a nice collection of good films and yes, some great ones. Cinema Paradiso and Die Hard are in my all time favorites. Midnight Run and A Fish Called Wanda are favorites (not ten, but ones I revisit often).

I've thought for a while that Die Hard sort of invented a new genre, or at least a sub-genre of action movies. There are so many movies now where someone "doesn't want to be a hero but has no choice because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and is the only one who can save the day" that it's easy to forget that Die Hard did it first (or at least I've always thought it did - please correct me if you can think of an earlier example).

It's also easy to forget that Bruce Willis was not at all an action star at the time. He was only known for comedy.

    Die Hard (1988)
    They Live (1988)
    Child's Play (1988)
    Hairspray (1988)
Big Top Pee-Wee (1988) ...but only because Kris Kristofferson was totally tripping balls throughout

I was prepared to bust up in here and claim that Grave Of The Fireflies is better than anything on the list. Glad to see its inclusion. I rewatched the blu-ray last year with my girlfriend and she absolutely loved it.

  23. In no particular order: Dead Ringers, Bird, Mississippi Burning, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Frantic, School Daze, Colors, and believe it or not, Rambo III.

I'm a big fan of Terry Gilliam, but The Adventures of Baron Munchausen bored me to tears. The imagery was wonderful, but the story was so dumb that I could hardly get through it. (Time Bandits and Brazil are two of my favorite movies...)

I voted for (in order of my preference):
    Big
    The Last Temptation of Christ
    Rain Man
    Beetlejuice
    Who Framed Roger Rabbit

The only other ones I remember are Die Hard (decent enough, but not my type of film), Police Squad (this kind of movie had been made so many times before, it's just old hat), and Coming To America (overrated - Eddie Murphy is good when he plays it cool, not over the top.)
