Not to veer too far off-topic, but with regard to Mr. Hisaishi, I've been listening to the recent Ghibli soundtrack box dedicated to his work and loving it. How does material released under his own name compare?

As far as I'm concerned; even better.

He does repeat a few of his Ghibli compositions in his solo works. If you're looking to get into his solo works a bit more, I'd highly recommend those albums above.

Piano Stories - Quintessential and essential. It's all in the title.
Asian XTC - More so world & orchestra music. A perfect album.
Encore - Predominantly his best-know compositions arranged just on piano.
Melodyphony - Like above, but with a beautifully recorded orchestra.
Minima_Rhythm I - More neo-classical. Some nice experimental stuff on here. And the sequal is almost as good.

Thanks for the recommendations. Fortunately, most of these are reasonably easy to attain - no complaints if some record company takes your advice to create an OAS set of them though. :D

After having recently immersed myself in the discography of Chicago, here are my five current favorites.

I actually got the bright idea to use a pic of the cover of the real "Original Album Series" box that Rhino put out, and, for the purposes of this thread, paste my five favorites onto the front. Don't look for it in stores, it doesn't actually exist! :D

I'm now convinced that VII is my top favorite by the band. I love every track on it. A sprawling double full of playful jazz colorings, exotic touches, lush ballads and captivating instrumentals. V is likely my sixth favorite, and is waiting in the wings, but unfortunately there is a five album limit to these sets.
