This would be a great boxed set of a selection of his more folk oriented albums

DeGarmo & Key would be best as far as this series is concerned with these configurations:
This Time Thru, Straight On, This Ain't Hollywood, Mission of Mercy, Communication (their early Lamb and Lion studio albums plus their first 2 PowerDiscs/Benson albums)
Commander Sozo and The Charge of the Light Brigade, Streetlight, D&K, The Pledge, Heat It Up (all the rest of the 1980s PowerDiscs/Benson albums )
The 2 live albums, the solo albums and either Go To The Top or To Extremes (I'd pick "Go To The Top" for "Family Reunion")

Fortunately, this configuration would make sense since Universal owns all of his major recorded catalog except for the Epic recordings. My previous mentioned bundles: DeGarmo & Key's entire catalog is owned by Universal with no exceptions.

And the fantasy box I made for the five Zeppelin albums I'd first bundle...

I'm assuming the album covers of these artists speak for themselves in terms of what they are called, especially with most of Chicago's titles and Zeppelin's early ones. Roman numeral knowledge is all one needs. :) But I suppose I shouldn't assume that with all the artists I may do.

    Another configuration:

    Are You Experienced (UK version)
    Axis: Bold As Love
    Electric Ladyland (US cover)
    Smash Hits (UK version)
    Band of Gypsys (US cover)

    Then for Volume 2:

    The Cry of Love
    Rainbow Bridge
    In the West
    War Heroes
    Loose Ends

Ok I broke the studio album rule, but BoG and In the West have a lot of original material (BoG is completely new)

I would exchange IV for Presence.
IV pretty much sells itself. Presence is way underrated and would benefit from an inclusion, but YMMV.

Dire Straits (original masterings, US for debut and Communique):

    Dire Straits
    Communique
    Making Movies
    Love Over Gold
    On Every Street

For your out-of-this-world demo-disc-worthy original mastering of Brothers In Arms I'll direct you to the nearest bargain bin, case solved. On Every Street deserves way more kudos than it gets.

You're right that "Presence" would be more of an unexpected entry, but I'm just bundling the five best albums by the band (in my humble opinion of course). Or at least the five that I feel are the most "essential". Presence is actually the last one I'd include, although it's definitely very good.

    The Who:

    Meaty, Beaty, Big And Bouncy
    Who’s Next
    Who By Numbers
    Who Are You
    Face Dances

An excellent sampler to expose the 60’s material, a warhorse to pull the doubters in and three later albums that deserve a lot more recognition. Keep in mind that I do think all the albums up to, and including, It’s Hard are essential.

And my Alice Cooper Fantasy Five Box...

I actually own the real box for this, featuring the first five albums. It is great of course, but these five would have been even more perfect for my tastes, by the addition of "Billion Dollar Babies" and the legendary "Greatest Hits" album, which remains the one Alice release I'd first secure if I could only keep one. It's one of those records that is every bit an "album" as much as a "greatest hits".

See, for me these sets are an inexpensive introduction to an artist and as such should feature their first five albums. I understand the rationale of having something from each era, but I personally want to start from the beginning and chronologically introduce myself to an artist's music. And then if I like what I hear, dig further into the library. As a consumer, I find the "sample from each era" tactic annoying because I know I'm missing out on some of the best stuff. Because they tend to skip over the better selling albums.

Imo, the point is to fill in that 'dive-in' gap after a well done compilation did the initial trick, so to speak. The grand-scale approach. I think that makes sense when an artist/band has been around for quite a while, although in some cases I do think a tight sequencing does make more sense. See my Killing Joke set, they went in quite a different direction after their initial run. In the case of, say, Genesis, two sets is the better thing.
