Japanese 2009 mini-LPs editions of Vol. 4 (UICY-94185), SBS (UICY-94186), Sabotage (UICY-94187), Technical Ecstasy (UICY-94190) have different mastering in comparison with Andy Pearce mastering from European editions of 2009. They are DCD remastered by Hitoshi Takiguchi. Channels not inverted for SBS.
I compared the WB edition 2016 (2012) with Japanese mini-LP (2009, UICY-94190) of Technical Ecstasy. They are very similar. Japanese is a bit louder, which does NOT make it worse

I'll check my catalog number when I get home, but I believe I saw Pearce's credit in the booklet, I'll have to check. With all the SACD's that get reissued in jewel cases, I wonder why they don't reissue the SACD's of those albums?

Haven't heard them all but I like the 2016 over the old WB.

I still prefer the 2009 over the 2016, though.

You described the sound of these 2016 remasters well!! They all sound like fluffy auditory pillows. Is this really how the master tapes sound?

How much different is it from the others with the same catalog #?

It is the only pressing with that catalog number.

As I remember these specific 2009 Japan mini-lp versions you mention were all taken from '96 Castle remasters. but with further compression and tweaking. IMO they were awful. The first three albums in that series were left untouched from the then new Pearce 2009 masterings, but the other albums hadn't been done by Pearce yet so they tweaked the same old Ray Staff remasters.

Right, apologies as it has been a long time and I am home ill right now. We did compare the France releases and they didn't sound the same at all on two different systems. The France pressing sounds a little more modern up front towards you where the Japan is very relaxed and sounds bigger/ more open at least on the systems we tried them on. The UK pressings IIRC are more scarce but the sonics on the two albums we tried matched the France sonics and not the Japan. YMMV, some people can tell the same differences and some do not notice. We, Forum member pig whisperer and I, did.

I don't have that one, I guess I have the 2010? Mine is in a jewel case. Are those SHM's flat transfers of the SACD's then?

CD Japan says that these use the 2004 remasters as the source - I think the Black Box.

Ok just checked my Vol 4 SHM, UICY-20107, and the Pearce credit is definitely there. Date is 2010 and again, this sounds awesome. Only the SACD would become my go to if it gets reissued. On vinyl my go to is the Rhino Bellman cut.

The 2010 Japan jewel case SHM simply used the 2009 Pearce.

There is no difference unless you believe that the "SHM" thing helps or hurts when played back on a CD player.

Well I don’t want to wade into that debate, but I just like the Pearce remaster overall. I never bought the standard CD, but when the SHM came up for sale for $10 I nabbed it.

Besides, we all know it’s the OBI that makes it sound so good...:nyah:

I have the NELCD 6005 - two different ones, actually. One is made in France, the other comes from Japan.

I prefer the CLACD over the NELCD. Same mastering, but without the distracting and unconnected live bonus track. Also without the dumb advertisement obscuring the album artwork.

Thanks. I did not notice this information on the site CD Japan. Is there any contradiction between the information in the booklet (“DSD remastered 2009”) and on the site (“Features 2004 remastering”)?

These Japanese editions sound great for SBS, Sabotage and TE. IMO

I believe that Castle sort of "updated" the 1996 remasters in 2004. A few were tweaked a bit. The 2009 Japan issues were definitely not from The Black Box.

The "DSD" credit is suspect. I think they just used the Castle CDs. As I mentioned, the first three albums had been recently done by Andy Pearce, so they used those masterings there, but Vol. 4 onward were sourced from the same old Ray Staff remasters from '96 (2004) but as I remember with a lot more compression.

I doubt anybody who values dynamics would agree.

I had a hard time finding the CLACD for this title for some reason, so I opted for the NELCD instead. I find this mastering, along with the 2009 sound the best to my ears.
