Your Top 3 Moby Grape Studio Albums

Let's see them! Though a lot of people only know the first (self-titled) album, the band has actually recorded eight studio albums, with the last one being recorded in 1989. Let's see your top 3 favorites!

For me, it's Moby Grape, Moby Grape '69, and 20 Granite Creek, though some days Truly Fine Citizen could beat out 20 Granite Creek for the #3 spot.

First three for me - though WOW and '69 could switch positions depending on my mood. Over the years I've grown to appreciate Truly Fine Citizen as a mellow classic in its own right. Of course it is just a shadow of the debut, but it has its charms.

 

Truly Fine Citizen is best appreciated on a gray, dreary day when staring out the window at the rain. That album just has a certain human element and authenticity to it that you don't find anywhere else in the Grape's canon.

 

Their debut album is the best debut that ever existed.

 

I think this would represent most people's opinions. I actually do like Grape Jam, but more as a sort of bonus LP inclusion with Wow. I've only listened to The Melvilles once so I'm not sure I'm fair to it or not. I might have to dig that and 20 Granite Creek out.

 

"Never" is the only good song on Grape Jam, really. I have a friend who is a Moby Grape fanatic, and knows Peter Lewis well. Lewis comes down here to LA and plays with his daughter fairly frequently. I've seen them a few times. It's too bad there's not a book on the Grape. I'd definitely read it.

 

Peter Lewis is the guy to write that book. There are stories circulating around the 'net that Lewis has told - fairly amazing stuff. He's a true survivor - not just of the Moby Grape saga. My guess is - if anything he might be waiting for the earthly exit of that pernicious ex-manager!

 

Matthew Katz should be kicking the bucket any year now. Dude is almost 90.

If you love the Grape, check out Peter Lewis' daughter's album -- it's on Spotify. All Grape songs, with Peter playing and singing some. Arwen Lewis. Truly fine.

They could make a great movie out of the band's story if someone like Werner Herzog or Steven Soderbergh wanted to do it. Why not.

 

The first two are solid and honestly I'm not sure I've heard the others straight through. I do enjoy the demos/alternates set The Place And The Time (2009, Sundazed) quite a bit.

 

Has 20 Granite Creek ever been available on CD ...? I'd love to hear it again, as that may be in my own Grape top three ...

I'm fortunate, I've been on a couple bills with Jerry Miller and his band. A really sweet guy and, when he's 'on', still an incredible mix of r&b, jazz and country, seamlessly played on Beulah, his ancient Gibson L5. I'm hoping to make it down to Milton one of these Tuesdays to sit in with him.

 

Although I consider the 1st album a landmark in rock history, my top three looks like this:

1. Moby Grape '69,
2. Wow
3. a tie between:
Truly Fine Citizen
20 Granite Creek

 

Only heard the first three. Had 'Great Grape' for years before I heard anything else. Think I picked it up early on having never heard of them before. Love that comp. Great stuff.

 

My favorite is 20 Granite Creek, followed by the debut and Live Grape ('78) which I don't see listed. - I was at those Shady Grove shows recorded for the album. Better days...

Yes, 20 Granite Creek is available on cd. And speaking of Jerry Miller, his "Life Is Like That" album (cd) is also excellent!

I love Wow. First album is great too...'69 is about half great IMO.

 

Definitely one of them. Some good albums later but, really, the first album is in a different league.

 

Found it- ‘Never’ from Grape Jam. Not a top three Grape album.

 

Vintage Grape (2 cd) is a great collection. Highly recommended.

 

For me its the debut, Wow & '69, but they are the only ones I've heard. They're all great. I'll have to check out Truly Fine Citizen. I have the Vintage anthology which has some tracks from it but because they are near the end and I haven't played it in a long time, I have overlooked them.
