I still don't think the truth of Rey's parentage is quite as cut and dry as this movie presents it. I don't think we will find out she's a solo or Skywalker or a Kenobi...But there is more than what was shown here.

My theory? She's a child or sibling of one of the students Luke was training at the temple.

Now, not having read much of the new canon I'm not 100 percent sure if this is the same now, but in previous EU Canon, some of which HAS been adapted into the new timeline, not all of Luke's Jedi students are children. Some are adults and older teens like himself. Notice that in both TFA and TLJ no one specifies the ages of all of Luke's students. What if in Luke's recruitment travels he met someone who was adept with the Force and he offered to train them, but they had a child or a younger sister they had to care for? Perhaps he allowed this person to bring the girl with them to where he had his temple. Perhaps there she befriended some of the other students, including young Ben Solo and she even knew Han and Leia, who I'm sure may have been regular visitors. That would explain why not only does Kylo seem to know about her, but why also Han gives off a vibe that he knows more about her than he was letting on and was even slightly protective of her.

So...How does Luke not know who she is the moment he meets her? Two possibilities...

One is that in the chaos of the destruction of the temple, Luke assumed she died, but in reality Kylo took her with the few of Luke's other students he didn't kill and , because he was fond of her and wanted to ironically protect her from both Luke AND Snoke, wiped her mind with the Force and dropped her off in the care of junk traders whom she thought were her parents. The ones who sold her for drinking money .

    Or...

Luke finds young Rey amid the ruins of the temple, alive and tramatized. He briefly cares for her until he realizes her Force potential and fears that what happened to Ben could repeat. So , racked with guilt for what happened with her guardian ,he erases her memory of what happened at the temple, puts her in the care the Jedi historian we see at the start of TFA and tells him to take the girl far away and not to tell him where they were going, and to make sure he would never find Rey and train her himself, uses a mind trick on himself so he'd forget her, and then disconnected himself from the Force, until Rey returns into his life a decade later.

Either way, it still keeps the integrity of both the " clues" in TFA whilst keeping the integrity of the reveals in this movie.

Star Wars has always been the cinematographic equivalent of a cheeseburger. It's the best food ever when you're 10 or 12, and you know what the ingredients are or what it tastes like when you order one.
The big problem with the prequels is that Lucas couldn't get the proportions of the two main ingredients, meat and cheese, right. At one point, there's too much cheese, at another point there was too much meat. And he didn't know anymore how to let the cheese melt so it could mix with the patty.
My problem with TFA is that they just went back to the old recipe. The bun was new, but most of the ingredients were also reheated frozen food.
TLJ may change some of the ingredients, but it's also the first one in an eternity to get the balance between meat and cheese right.

Finn's protective nature is still there in TLJ, and I wouldn't be surprised if it comes into play again in Episode IX.

Yeah, it's there, but I think separating the two characters for pretty much the entire film was a terrible move. They had great chemistry in TFA, which this film really needed. To use an example from the Star Wars universe, the chemistry between Han and Leia in Empire really helped to elevate that film. The Last Jedi could have really used a shot of that, and it would have strengthened the characters and given the actors something more to do than look puzzled or annoyed. Rey spent way too much time on her own in this one, and the film feels pretty disjointed as a result. In fact I think that's why the Casino Planet sequence feels so out of place, because the film is pretty poorly tied together. It feels like two or three films mashed together because that's what it really is.

Luke was separated from Han and Leia in Empire as much for his Jedi training as for the contrived way to resolve the love triangle between them. Rey is separated from Finn ostensibly for her Jedi training, but there's not much of a reciprocated romantic feeling between them, much to Finn's chagrin, I'm sure. (If anything, TLJ suggests a love "square" with the inclusion of the Rose-Finn dynamic, and did I detect a spark between Rey and Poe at the end of the movie?)

The one constant in all of this is that the character seeking Jedi training has to separate from the group, since it's a road one travels alone. Interestingly, Rey didn't get the guidance she thought she'd get from Luke, and, left to her own devices, struck up a pseudo-relationship with Kylo Ren through the Force. She couldn't do any of that if Finn was hanging around her.

    Yeah, but:

    1) Luke was with Han and Leia for quite some time at the start of the movie and
    2) The chemistry between Han and Leia was a lot stronger

In TlJ, they kept the characters with the best chemistry apart for virtually the entire film.

    Dumb mistake.

I also didn't propose Finn "hang around her" the entire time she was with Luke not getting much training. I thought he should seek her out and find her toward the end of her stay on Planet Porg, and then end up on Snoke's star destroyer going after her.

Luke, Han and Leia actually had just one scene together, the recovery room scene after Luke came out of the Bacta tank. You can't have something similar for Finn and Rey because Rey had already left by the end of the previous movie.

I do understand what you're saying about missing the chemistry they had in TFA, but I just don't see how you can sustain it in TLJ while Rey is on a solo hero's journey.

Luke and Han also had scenes together, though. It tied Luke's story and character in with the story of Han and Leia. We didn't get that in TLJ, and it shows in the complaints we see about the film. It's disjointed as a result.

Yes, and that's exactly the reason why they should have had Finn take off to find Rey, and encounter her as she was finishing up her "study" with Luke. She gets her "solo" adventure, then reconnects with Finn, and ends up teaming up with him against Kylo. Ties everything together as a single story, and gives more screentime to characters with chemistry, which is never a bad thing.

Traditionally, the hero's journey in these movies is a solo adventure, and that includes the conflict at the end. Rey has to stand on her own without help from the outside, just as Luke did, or else she's not much of a hero.

Plus the fact that for jedi relationship is forbidden so I’m not buying that there will. E a fight for who Rey will be with. I simply think Poe meeting Rey is the spark that will light the.p new rebellion. New leader meeting new jedi not the start of a love interest. Rey should know how relationships and forbidden attachment worked out for Anakin and the rest of the galaxy. Plus she’s always been a loner on jaku.

Don't worry, Scott Mendelson will be along soon to post a rebuttal. ;)

Yep. This movie is so derided that it was the biggest box office hit of 2017 and made 1.3 billion dollars so far and will probably end at 1.5-1.7 billion. All WITHOUT a big push from China. My God what a horrid flop.

It would be great to see Star Wars to do well there, but it never has and unless they cast a whole film filled with Chinese stars and done in Chinese language, that's likely not going to happen, so boo hoo, China is the only market were Star Wars wasnt #1 movie in the world. Shock. Gasp. Horror. Whatever shall Disney do?

Oh, Yeah. this. This is an artist rendition of how Bob Iger has started every morning since December 17th...

Huh. And here I thought Rian ruined Star Wars and the last Jedi flopped. Hmm...Why would they have him write a stand alone film with Yoda and Mastermind another trilogy then?

Oh right. The last Jedi is a hit.

Yes, and Finn would end up captured and getting used as a distraction to let Kylo slay Snoke. Rey would then essentially have to save both of their butts.

So, still the hero, but not off entirely disconnected in her own separate disjointed movie.

If you want to tell a hero's solo journey, then do it. But that would require dropping Finn, Poe, Leia and the rest and all their drama.

That last " inconsistency" that troll points out is explaned. Hux tells Kylo Rey took Snoke's shuttle, and we knew earlier she told Chewie and R2 to wait for her in the Falcon. She just met up with them and then they homed in on Leia's beacon, leading her to Crait.

I wonder if these loons actually payed attention, or even watched the movie at all.

I think they're talking about Captain Phasma... the scene in question did have her magically appearing with an organized group of stormtroopers, far from where she had been when the ship was damaged.

It must be some kind of private joke. He credits himself as being "executive writer with Leon Staves" of the project.

Staves is some teenager who is indeed writing Yoda: A Star Wars Story, but it's fan fiction:

By the way, Johnson uses a picture from the 1966 electric tour by Bob Dylan as his Twitter banner.

Ah. I see. Yeah that was a little odd, but keep in mind we pick up with Finn regaining consciousness, so a few minutes have passed from when we last saw them. The explosion may have knocked Phasma back across the hangar and killed a few of her troops. It's easy to assume Phasma ordered some more troops to come to the hangar and they came to block Finn and Rose's escape.

Bad trim or edit? Possibly, but it's not a big deal. It just feels like nit picking taken to an extreme.

And yes I've seen people nitpick the Rey thing too as proof that Rian Johnson pissed on their childhoods.

That text would never get by Mr. Lippman.

And since I'm bringing up Seinfeld, I think it's kind of hilarious that Mr. Pitt, was the voice of Palpatine in the Clone Wars Series.
