I know there have been some similar threads about this, but I am really just beside myself here and wanted to share my thoughts with like minded people.

Today, I bought a perfectly good used CD copy of “From the Cradle” by Eric Clapton at a used record store for $1. ONE DOLLAR!

This is truly the golden age of used CD collecting, and just a great time to be stocking up on music for music lovers. I literally put more money in the parking meter outside the store than what I paid for this FANTASTIC album from one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Incredible.

What is more astounding to me is that I could pull this up on iTunes or something and pay probably $10 for an inferior compressed version of the same thing, and AND with my $1 copy, I can still make my own portable friendly version if I want.

This post isn’t really going anywhere. Like I said, just wanted to share.

Enjoy it while it lasts (it won't last).

I love the fact that when something is no longer in print, I can still get it without paying inflated prices.

  4. Enjoy it now, because once CDs are devalued enough businesses won't bother catering to CD customers anymore. No one can turn a profit on $1 CDs.

I worry about the CD ecosystem of products and where we go from here - car players, empty jewel cases, the used market, new retail stock and CD hardware. Our options will soon start shrinking unless the next generation suddenly discovers a yearning for shiny discs.

It’s funny that 15 years ago or so when I started buying used vinyl, I had to wade through so many copies of Frampton Comes Alive.

Now whenever I look at the used CD section, I have to do the same for Hootie and the Blowfish, Limp Bizkit, REMs Monster and of course Alanis.

    Full circle

I mean, I love my vinyl and SACD’s as much as anyone too, but this is insane. I am buying stuff and discovering stuff that I normally wouldn’t because there is nothing to lose.

It is amazing to me the quality of some of the material that is being given away. Today, I saw in the same bin a very common Wallflowers, Bringing Down the Horse. $1. Awesome record. I know everyone has different tastes, but that was a huuuuuge huge album in the 90’s. So much you can pick up right now

Another example, I picked up a *new* sealed Mike Bloomfield box set for $15.

I wouldn't worry about CDs and CD-players going anywhere unless one plans on living to be 150 years old.
If one does live that long, I suspect one's greatest concerns will be other than how to find a way to play some late-twentieth century compact music disc that is still structurally intact and otherwise perfectly playable.

  10. And while more standard CD's are sold for next to nothing, the prices for used CD's for more collectable items are still very high.

The other side of the coin is that if you are trying to unload some of your collection, you can't even tempt people at $4.00 a CD.

3 or 4 times a year I usually take a couple of boxes to my local record fair and I have them at $4 each.

Many of these CDs you can't just walk into a store here in Australia and buy off the racks anymore and still I had punters either trying to knock the price down or just not taking a chance on it.

And when preparing them for sale, I give them all a new case ( and my CDs are very well looked after ) and they just toss them back in the box as if they were trash.

To me, it feels just like the great vinyl sell-off of the early 1990s. I bought probably 1,000 used LPs for $2 to $3 or less during that period. Now, it's $1 CDs, which I am buying by the truckload, it seems. No room to store them, but, man, am I having a great time with all this new-to-me music.

In my experience the used CD market is passed its prime. I think about 2 years ago was the peak. At this point casual fans who didn't know what they had have all ditched their discs. You might make the occasional splash (especially if u enjoy classical). But right now the people who have collectible discs know what they have.

The used LP market's high water mark was probably 5-6 years ago. Its been a long time. I actually think back to $1 titles I passed on back when cheap good used LPs were plentiful and kick myself.

Right now is the time to buy used movies. Great collections seem to be getting ditched daily, and can be had very cheap. Even Blu Rays when ur lucky.

A local record store here don't purchase anymore used cds (for selling these). "I just earn 10 percent of my profit by cds and that's why I am selling now only vinyl", was his explanation.

    Well, that says it all....

  19. Lots of good points being raised in this thread. I think the one difference between the great vinyl sell-off of the 1990s and now for used CDs is the Internet. The Internet makes it much easier to keep CD alive even as the number of users shrink.

I wish I had your guys' luck. The used CD shops near me have figured out the OOP game and I'm seeing CDs that a year ago were $3.99 or $4.99 are now $8.99 up to $11.99. Thank goodness for Amazon and Ebay.

Agree and in the same boat - ran out of room a while ago. Still working through a used pile of approx. 70 discs I picked up a month ago (paid $40) w/ many new to me artists.

I used to sell a few CDs here in the Classifieds, but it came to a point where I had to drop the price of the CD quite a bit, so by the time I packaged it up and posted it internationally it wasn't worth it.

Shops that sell used CDs are mostly in the $5-6 range around here. BUT - private sales are where I look, frequent deals there.

Agree on the more common albums and pressings on CD being dirt cheap, but anything of desirability has certainly gone up in value. The availability of a lot of the early CD pressings are becoming much more scarce. Literally 2/3's of my collection is either unobtainable by price or availability where they were much more so ten years ago.

I do love a good old "used" CD. Its how half my collection has been built....not the first time I have paid 1p plus postage (£1.26) on Amazon from a third party for a great album
